I'm in the middle of the US and our snow was high in radiation. I wasn't sure if it was relative to this, some of our local dumps, or some of the old McDonnell Douglas dump sites.
Very big problem here that can effect the world.
That plant needs to be quarantined (if at all possible) and abandoned. Maybe they need their nuke card revoked.
Oh no! They say he's got to go... no, no... Godzilla
Fukushima is a mess in every way possible and a great example of why pressurized uranium based nuclear power sucks.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linear_no-threshold_model A little beta emitter contaminated water in the ocean isn't going to kill anybody. This is the "news" we are dealing with.

They will come to rue the day.
Well, in their defense, that nuclear reactor was designed for something like a magnitude 7.5 or 8 earthquake, and that thing was a magnitude 9. But then again, Japan sits on a fault line, so that thing should've been overengineered even moreso.
And that fails to mention that it was actually the Tsunami that damaged the plant. Come on, Japan, you built a berkeleying nuclear plant on the coast of one of the most earthquake-prone areas in the world, and you didn't consider tsunamis?!
I'm more appalled that the ISS was hijacked and no one told us.

I don't think they considered one the size that it was.....otherwise, still not much different than chernobyl or all of our nuclear weapons tests in the southwest.

At Fukushima, there was a meltdown of shut-down reactors and a release of radioactive steam, most intense in its effects while the I-131 was still radioactive. There is a continued problem with leaking fission products into the groundwater and ocean. It is a bad situation for the workers and the people that used to live nearby.
At Chernobyl, a much larger reactor was operating at full-blast under test conditions and ended up spiking to 3600% of rated power and it actually exploded. The reactor burst the containment lid high into the air (with attending, radioactive plume of debris and steam) which then fell to earth atop the core mass (with attending, radioactive plume of debris) and then the process repeated itself (with attending, radioactive plume of debris and steam). This is not to say that Fukushima isn't dangerous or a serious mess, but just that Chernobyl was off the scale by A LOT

Rue the day? Who talks like that?

How do you feel about the Pebble Bed/liquid flouride thorium reactors (LFTR)reactors? Are they as much of a safety improvement as their advocates claim?
Semi-related Disclosure: I'm really wanting to see Pandora's Promise
As i began my search for gold i stopped to have my fortune told silently her fingers traced my hand, i said what will my future be, the only word she said to me was sand! i laughed at her and traveled on until one day i stood upon the border of a god forsaken land, i knew those hills had gold to fetch, just to cross that little stretch of sand, darling just wait a little longer i'll soon be by your side again i am almost at the rainbows end, my burrow died 3 days ago my waters gone my step is slow and it's still so far to where the mountains stand not another living sole just a poisoned water hole and sand, the deserts playing tricks on me is that my darling holding out her hand, my arm's reach out my fingers touch, but lord above me all i touch is sand, darling wait for me no longer my mortal strength is gone at last the spark of life is fading fast, fortune waits for other men but for me the rainbows end is sand endless burning sand........
Timbuk3 had it right:
I study nuclear science I love my classes I got a crazy teacher, he wears dark glasses Things are going great, and they're only getting better I'm doing all right, getting good grades The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades
I've got a job waiting for my graduation Fifty thou a year -- buys a lot of beer Things are going great, and they're only getting better I'm doing all right, getting good grades The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades
Well I'm heavenly blessed and worldly wise I'm a peeping-tom techie with x-ray eyes Things are going great, and they're only getting better I'm doing all right, getting good grades The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades

Lyrics left out of the popular version:
I'm well aware of the world out there, getting blown all to pieces, but what do I care?
Blowin' up the lab, Blowin' the professor, Torn between two evils, I always pick the lesser.

It runs unpressurized so it cant blow up, its optimal run temp is as hot as it will get so it can't melt down, it doesn't make plutonium for weapons, its hundreds of orders of magnitude more efficient and thorium is far more abundant on earth than uranium. So yeah, they're right.
Should I become suddenly rich, the LFTR people would get a lot of it. Though more likely the Chinese will figure it out(based on OUR initial research in the 60s!) and license it for whatever they feel like charging.

I'm not going to pass on a "lyrics fight"
Reflex in the sky
Warn you you're gonna die
Storm coming, you better hide
From the atomic tide
Flashes in the sky
Turns houses into sties
Turns people into clay
Radiation minds decay
Robot minds of robot slaves
Lead men to atomic graves
Plastic flowers melt in sun
Fading moon falls upon
Dying world of radiation
Victims of mad frustration
Burning glow of obscene fire
Like electric funeral pyre
Buildings crashing down
To Earth's cracking ground
Rivers turn to wood
Eyes melt into blood
Earth lies in death bed
Clouds cry for the dead
Terrifying rain
Ease the burning pain
Electric Funeral
Electric Funeral
Electric Funeral
Electric Funeral

Bits and pieces (and)
(Bits of) my creation--Is it real?
It's my creation--I do not know
No hesitation--No heart of gold
Just flesh and blood--I do not know
From my heart and from my hand
Why don't people understand
