Today I saw a car that I've never seen before. It was a Nissan pulsar sport wagon. It looked like a pontiac fiero bred with a volvo station wagon, what a look. Weird thing is the car was made probably 20yrs ago and I have never seen one.

Any of you folks know what I'm talking about?

yup and I think that it was modular meaning the wagon part could be interchanged

and as per wiki it was modular

"The EXA was spun off as its own model, with an innovative modular rear end: customers could opt for a coupé, hatchback or an open-top car depending on what they put on. This version was actually based on the North American B12 "Sentra" chassis, and was equipped with the 1.8L CA18DE engine (93 kW @ 6400 rpm, 156 N·m (115 lb·ft) @ 4800 rpm), as found in the S13 Nissan Silvia. This version of the EXA was available in North America under the name Pulsar NX and was sold from 1987 to 1990."

The Pulsar had an option that I believe was called the Sport Bak, basically making it a small wagon.

Yup, Sport Bak. There were never lot of them around, even when they were new. It was a pretty expensive option I think.

I haven't seen many on the street. I do recall one guy running a Pulsar in SCCA GT-4 putting one on the back of his race car at the Runoffs one year.

Oh, and you can get one in Polyphony Digital's "Gran Turismo 4" videogame. For those of you who know the game, I won my 1st 200pt race in it (Family Cup at El Capitan, difficulty at 8 or 9).

Friend got that accessory or option. The theory was you could easily convert the car. The reality was you had a big clonk'n hatchback unit to store.

Almost as hilarious looking as the Geo Storm Wagon.

A geek friend of mine had a Storm...an automatic Storm...an automatic non-GSi Storm.

Poor bastard never even comprehended the total loss of cool that he experienced.

The wagon back could be interchanged with the normal hatch, two cars in one so to speak. They were never very popular new, but it was an interesting concept. I had a friend with one back in the day, never used the wagon backend, it just collected dust.

The Japanese companies put out some really cool oddball/experimental stuff in the '80s. Why can't they do that anymore?

Hilarious and so well said. Buddy had a Pulsar wagon deal. Always thought it was kind of weird at the time, but I was 16 and my affection for the odd in automotivia hadn't kicked in yet.

I seem to recall an insert that converted the Nissan to a truck like bed. It was a blow molded plastic thing that went in and sealed the inside from anything you put in it yet still was open like a truck bed. Wierd.
