SWMBO went to leave this morning and the garage door opener sounded like an M22 Muncie before she flipped it off. Nothing was hitting the door at all. Now it just grinds and the chain doesn't move. House was built in 96, garage door opener is original, Craftsman unit. It was always loud.
Get a new one? Any one in particular? It's a standard 2-car garage door, and there is a man door to outside.
If you can swing one of the counterbalance mounted ones like the Liftmaster 8500 series, you won't regret it.
Much, much quieter.
Belt drive! Quiet....
I got the cheapest one i could find with an exterior keypad. Its been working fine for a few years. They are easy to install yourself.

You didn't ask, but it's probably just the plastic "rack" part, and is both cheap and easy to replace. Hey this is GRM after all...

I put in a belt-drive Chamberlain I got at Lowe's about a year ago. So far so good and much quieter than the chain-driven Crapsman that it replaced.
I've got the direct drive liftmaster on 3 of my doors. Won't buy anything else.
I had to add two openers to my garage and went the Liftmaster 8500 route after spending some time on Garage Journal. They really do work great and by the second one installation was around an hour. Probably not as much benefit if you are replacing something already hung but one thing I really like about this setup is the remote mount wireless lights which actually provide a usable amount of light to work in that part of the garage.
And they are seriously quiet...
