I love having a rolling tool cart to use in the garage and have a wonderful industrial Rubbermaid Ive used for many years. Unfortunately the current house has a tighter garage. The Rubbermaid has been put on permanent Champcar duty and lives in the trailer. It was way too big to maneuver around.
Ive been looking for a good alternative and in the meantime Ive been using a couple milk crates zip tied to a Harbor Freight dolly. It sorta worked but it wasnt very stable and it didn't roll very well.
Last week I took a stroll through an Ikea and found a winner. For 25 bucks I picked up a 3 shelf small metal cart. I put it together today and I think its going to work out perfect. It rolls great and will be a good replacement for the crates and zip ties.
Its called the Raskog which sounds like a great name for a Swedish black metal band.
I figured there might be others in the same boat that were looking for a smaller garage cart. It looks like the durability will be good. The weak link will likely be the casters, as is the case with all cheaper wheeled objects.
I have wanted a blue one as a low buck version of the Hazet assistent
But ikea never has the blue in stock when I go

They had tan, red, and black. I almost got the red but I remembered how the red cart I used when I was a tech was usually covered in black anyway.
I recently got one of those for the same purpose, it's been great so far. I'm considering spray bombing the inside of the "shelves" a lighter color so it's a little easier to find nuts and bolts in there.

I think Im going to put a piece of cardboard or something in the bottom of the top shelf. That way little stuff doesn't go through the holes.
I have one of these ikea shelves. It holds fruit and veg in the kitchen.
This thread inspired me to check the cart out. Ran to Ikea, and decided it would be a great project cart. I got the red/rust colored one, as I figured the tan one would look dingy almost immediately, and the darker colored one would make it harder to see parts and tools. While there, I looked at stuff to kit it out with. The cheap, thin cutting boards they sell are almost the perfect size, just a bit too small, so I picked those up to put on the bottom shelf, to keep things from falling through. I may tape it down, which would also cover the gaps at the ends. They had a 99 cent bin that would be good to throw hardware into as it's coming off a car, so I grabbed one of those. In the warehouse area, they had some bins that hung off the sides of the shelves. They look like they'd be perfect to toss a ratchet or screwdriver into, and make it easy to retrieve, so I bought a couple of those, too. It also turns out that my electric impact wrench fits almost perfectly into one of the shelves, so it will probably have a new home on the center shelf, along with commonly used impact sockets.
making me wish Ikea was not an hour away

Glad its working for you. Ours got some heavy use this weekend and I think it is a great addition to the garage. Im pretty impressed so far with how well the casters seem to be handling the garage floor. They don't roll over everything but a small bit of rock or rust doesn't bring it to a screeching halt.

I do enough cutting/grinding/etc in my garage that I’m afraid anything magnetic would get covered in shards or flakes of metal. If that’s not an issue you’d have, that’d probably work great, would keep hardware and sockets from rolling around

Google "Raskog hack". There are a million things you can do with them.
weve had a teal one in my daughters bedroom/closet for 3 years now. Holds all the socks and stuff like that these days.

Great, there goes $100 next time I'm at Ikea and I buy 4 of 'em.
