For those who live under a rock, a couple weeks back there was a wildfire in Tennessee that destroyed something like 1,000 building and killed 14 people in Sevier County (Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge).
This is the latest. Rough time ahead for these kids.

I was down there 2 weeks before the fires. The cabin we stayed in is no longer.
I hope they are young enough to avoid being "promoted" up to adult charges.

Holy crap.
I hated driving through there, but I didn't hate it that much.
we stayed in a cabin between pigeon forge and gatlinburg over the summer. First time we had been out there and really enjoyed the area. It sucks to hear about how bad this has gotten.
I have great memories of staying there and hiking with the family a few years ago. I wonder how many people were not locals in those cabins. It must be terrifying to wake up to the roar of a wildfire, nevermind not knowing the lay of the land or which way to run. Only that you cannot stay in your wooden box.
I interviewed a firefighter for the Gowensville Fire Dept the other day for a property in my area. They had just gotten back from the Gatlinburg fire and he said he had never seen anything like it.

Yeah. My memories of that area are not fond, but what has happened there is terrible
I liked Gatlinburg in my earlier years, but can't deal with the crowds now. Its going to take while to recover from this.
I did spring break in pigeon forge one year - total riot. Vegas for people without teeth.
Much Coors Light was consumed.
Having gone gone through a couple of fires when we lived in Northern California, it is one of those things that is amazing to watch and terrifying at the same time.

Been there to cabin in the mountains a number of times. Took in some backroads a number of times. Very easy to get turned around and lost in daylight, cannot imagine trying to find a way out in the midst of a fire without being intimately familiar with the roads. Terrifying thought.

Makes me wonder how the people in the BMW fared.
Took a great vacation there with the family about 5 years ago. "Town" wasn't really my thing, but trips to the Dragon and Smoky Mountain National are fond memories. The place we stayed was up in the hills, so I'm pretty much assuming it's gone.
The fire that was allegedly started by the teens in question was a long damn way from town, and the other side of a pretty substantial mountain. They got bit by the proverbial butterfly of chaos theory. There's no likelihood that they intended or even could have conceived of the damage their fire would do. I would say any punishment they receive will be colored by events far beyond their control and will be a long way out of line with any other punishments handed out for similar misdeeds.

People died. I'm 100% with you.
