I'm Catholic, I don't think I have a single gay friend. Gay people never seem to run in the same circles as I do.

I think practicing homosexuals are leading a sinful life style. There was recently a news report of about how awful a priest in the area was for refusing to give a lesbian communion during her mother's funeral service. I'm of the opinion that the priest in question should be applauded for his integrity.

That said, I don't give a berkeley if the government recognizes gay marriage. I'm not going to put any effort into helping or hindering that cause. Marriage as a religious sacrament isn't going to be defiled by what is done outside of religion.

If the matter is put to a vote and people vote to allow it, I'm fine with that. If people vote to disallow it, I'm fine with that too. There are a lot of laws that I don't personally agree with, but I hardly see this as a very important issue

I was quite shocked when a couple folks I knew came out. One guy I worked with, the other was my neighbour.

Never would have guessed in a million years.

It doesn't bother me one bit, except one of the guys is a hugger.

Exactly! After all, Jesus was well known for turning away sinners. Hard-core, that Jesus. Never cut anyone any slack. I heard one time they were going to stone a woman accused of adultery and Jesus said something like "I am without sin so I get to cast the first stone!"

Ignoring the gay marriage issue, from what I've been taught, right or wrong:

You have to accept Jesus Christ as your lord and saviour, correct?

Hell yeah! Prince of Peace shows no mercy on their sinner asses! What we need are more hard core religious types being more judgmental and outspoken. That will make things loads better.

I shouldn't be so vicious. I'm Catholic, too, by the way, but I'm getting over it. I get it, I really do. But the irony of people being so judgmental and angry in the name of anything roughly associated with Jesus is hard to ignore. Let's face it, there's some pretty wacky stuff in the Bible. But by and large, once you get to the New Testament there's a lot of really good thinking there. And all the best parts, to me, really tell a story of a family of man. Forgiveness, not being judgmental, acceptance, understanding. But there are so many "Religious Leaders" who choose to focus on the most vial and reprehensible passages of the whole book.

If people could take the Bible, as a good way to live life, which there are a lot of good values............I wouldn't have a problem.

But if I don't agree with those, and want to live my own life, that doesn't infringe on anyone elses pursuit of life, libery and happiness..............I don't understand how that is anyone else's concern.

I feel like evangelical's are trying to convince everyone else, as a way to cement their own illogical beliefs.

Again, I have no problem with religion/animism/etc, just don't try to force your beliefs on me.........because I certainly won't be forcing mine on you.

The serious answer according to Catholic doctrine, is that if they've had no opportunity to know Christ, that's our failure rather than theirs. Not accepting Christ after having heard the Gospels would be consider a state of sin, but it's no man's place to damn another man and I can't speak as to who is or isn't in hell.

No one said she was damned. You can't receive communion when you're in a state of sin.

If I were living with my girlfriend and my priest knew that, he would be obligated to refuse to allow me to participate in any of the other sacraments before repenting my sins.

What do you bet that happens all the time, though? In fact, I know it does. In fact, it were me. I was in my pre-cana classes with the priest at our church. He knew we were living together. Never once even suggested that we couldn't go to communion. Shoot, by the time we got around to having a church wedding our son was already born. No one ever even suggested that we shouldn't take communion. Guess they all thought it was immaculate conception.

When all those priests were found to be behaving inappropriately and once found out, moved from parish to parish, you suppose any of them stopped taking communion?

No, your pillar of strength priest was just making a political statement. Imagine that- a religious figure making a political statement. And at a moment when he, more than anyone, should have shown compassion. Way to spread God's love.

...and choosing to do so at the expense of someone putting their mother to rest. That's pretty effing low. If he had religious obligation to performing those services, he could have found a way for him to not be the one performing them.

In truth - he is a E36 M3ty priest. His job is to follow the rules of his club - and if you were living in sin according to the rules of the club you should have got your ticket pulled. If he was a commanding officer he would be court marshaled.

On the other hand... he is a peddler of nonsense that is waning in popularity so anyone with a ticket gets to ride these days.

So, he knew what was in that woman's heart? What did he know that required him to publicly humiliate her? Did she come to him before the service and say "I had lesbian sex and I haven't been to confession"? He doesn't know any more than he knew about anyone else. What he does know is that every person there is a sinner and he probably knows personally that many of them hadn't been to confession in an age. Yet he gladly allowed them to take communion and he chose to publicly humiliate this woman.

And, think about this- he knew he was going to do it. No way he decided at the last second. He knew going in that he was going to publicly humiliate her. He easily could have pulled her aside before the service and explain that he wasn't willing to give her communion because God told him that she was living in sin. But he made the choice to humiliate her. Very Christ-like.

That's exactly my point- in my case and the other examples I posted. They do it all the time. Don't even think about it. Happens every week.

But this time, he had a "moral crisis" that had to be played out in public. Sorry, I'm not buying it.
