Reminds me of most of the performers of very early rap-more monotone spoken word style of performance done over a drum machine with a constant tempo throughout. I dare say the genre progressed to mainstream when hooks, samples, and voice inflection/pitch change were used to make the performance sound more like a musical piece than a robot reading a bedtime story.
