Opps, someone is in big trouble.

Boeing 747 mistakenly lands at small Kansas airport Nov 21, 2013 5:01 AM EST A Boeing 747 jumbo jet mistakenly landed a tiny airport in Wichita, Kansas late Wednesday, raising questions about whether or not the plane will be able to take off.

KAKE.com reports that the jet used to haul 787 Dreamliner parts landed at Jabara Airport instead of its intended destination of McConnell Air Force Base.

A Boeing spokesman confirmed to The Wall Street Journal in a statement that the plane had landed on the 6,101-foot long runway and that "we are working to determine next steps."

Emergency crews in Wichita were not sent to the airport and no injuries or property damage were reported, KAKE.com reported. Boeing has reportedly dispatched a tug to turn the jet around.

Officials tell Fox News that the FAA is currently investigating the situation and findings will be released in the coming weeks.

I live in Wichita and work at an aircraft company. People can't seem to stop talking about this.

We should have some strong straight winds over the next 24 hours, and with the colder temps take-off performance should be improved, but I'm not sure what else it'll take to get that thing out of Jabara. I imagine they'll have the plane empty of cargo and on a light fuel load.

Isn't there something like 3 runways all in line of his intended approach? Still doesn't excuse not knowing where you're supposed to land, especially on a regularly scheduled cargo hop.

In reply to kylini:

That part of town has McConnel AFB where he was supposed to be headed, Jabara, Cessna Airfield, and Beechcraft's airfield. McConnel (where Air Force 1 has been serviced and updated for years) and Beech both have control towers, I think Cessna's east side field lacks a tower.

This town is covered in airstrips. Wikipedia counts 9 if you include a couple that are closed.

Just came up, plane is still on ground. Some candid comments from onlookers are getting picked up by audio.

[edit] Hahahah, classic - newscaster didn't know her mike was open. Took a call from someone in management who apparently clued her in!

I really don't see a need for any concern, given that the entire state of Kansas is flat as a pancake and is therefore like one giant runway.

Pilot: "this runway sure is short"

Co-pilot: "yeah but it's plenty wide"

I wonder if there is an addition "landed at the wrong airport fee"

I was wondering when video of the attempted takeoff would be available...I wonder, would it be better to go full-throttle and wait for the turbines to spin up before releasing the brakes, or late apex the turn onto the runway at full power?

There isn't any since the guy called to tell the commentator to close her mike. I imagine they will open it again when we're closer to tee time.
