The other week my girl friend had come home from work mad and I asked her what was going on. She told me she had talked to her step dad earlier and he had sold one of his pistols to buy a new one. It turns out the one he sold was the one she learned how to shoot with she liked quite a bit. She had even told him that if he was ever going to sell it to let her know and she would buy it from him.

Well I knew what the gun was (a "little" Taurus .22 Mag revolver) and I knew he had to go to the ONLY gun shop in town. I went there are sure enough it was sitting in the case. I even took her in and she confirmed yep that was the gun. Well come this morning I went down and bought the Taurus after a little wheeling and dealing with the shop owner (I'm in there quite a bit so he deals with me). We wanted another trail gun for when we go camping and the like anyway and I figured if she was going to use it best to have something she is comfortable with.

Here it is.

Will a .22mag handle .22lr? Kind of like a .357 and a .38 special?

Nope the .22 Mag is slightly larger in diameter than the regular .22. There are other pistols out there that have swap out cylinders (like the Ruger Single Six) that allows you to shoot both however.

nice! but uh, isn't that a little illegal? buying a gun for someone else?

Buying a gun specifically as a gift to someone is legal in many states as long as it is legal for that person to buy the gun themselves. Now if someone gives you money and says go buy this for me then that is a straw purchase and it is illegal.

Good to hear you found it, rebel. IME, women take these kind of sentimental things very seriously. "Regifting season" (also known as "The X-mess" around our place) is often a minefield for me..

She'll love it, even though in this case she probably already expects it (after all, you took her down there to see the thing, right?).

friedgreen yeah she was kind of expecting it but was still happy to see it when she got home. She also got the registration papers for her new Border Collie today as well.

all of the paperwork i've had to fill out asked (in that list of questions where everything should be "no": are you a felon? no. are you depressed? no. are you a father raper and/or mother stabber? no.) are you purchasing this as a gift for someone else?

i don't know what goes on after that question gets checked "yes" but given the other questions around it, it just seemed like a dealbreaker.

edit: Rebelgtp: Borders are great dogs! i had one for 17 or so years, and will have another once i have a yard big enough.

Youngblood, that's exactly what I was talkin' about! I (without remembering where it came from!) put on a shirt SWMBO'd given me as a gift for a birthday or the x-mess or who knows what else on the day we went to my ex-girlfriend's wedding. Probably saved my ass that day, since I didn't realize she still considered the ex as some kind of "threat" (that I still don't understand). Yeah, I get sentimental too..but since I'm a guy, I don't have the complete catalogue of every single gift I've ever recieved or given in my head.

You're a better man than I..I like dogs too, but those things are seriously nervous sometimes..Dude, you may actually be in love this time.

In reply to Strizzo:

Strizzo, I've done this kind of thing before. Usually, you buy the gun for a friend just because the time window is closing, and then after a few months you can sell the thing to your friend by making them jump through the same hoops at that time. Any "hey, buy that for me" request usually ends up with me "selling" it to them for a dollar not much later (as long as they compensate me with the dough I spent to buy the thing in the first place, of course). The cops don't care about the real market value of the thing, they just want to track the path of ownership.

Or, at least..that's how it used to be. I haven't bought or sold a gun since that insipid "Patriot Act" crap was passed. YMMV.

Yeah her Border Collie is kind of on the nervous side and hyper but very sweet. She (the dog) loves my cattle dog and they play and play.

As for the love thing yeah I would say it is. We have been together for about a year and a half now and we have been living together since January.

We are thinking about shooting in competition this winter for some fun.
