I have a birthday coming up in a couple of weeks and I suffer from "when someone asks what I want my mind goes UTTERLY blank"-itis.
If you suggest a thing, please include a link I can forward to family who are frustrated with me..... There is so much STUFF in the world today that just saying XXX gives thousands of choices for people to sift through.
My list so far:
Cordless earbuds maybe but which ones?
VR headset to develop an iRacing setup, but again which one?
Computer capable of driving said setup? I need stupid simple, I do NOT want to build my own operating system or be an IT guy in any way. Luddite simple is my level of computer usage at this point.
What else? I have tools and toolboxes. What awesome little thing do you love and use would you recommend to a late 40's dude who likes to play with cars, guns, and the great outdoors?

My family used to have these lists for each other. I would just buy something from the list and wrap it up. We decided that we didn't really need more stuff and when we wanted something we would just buy it.
We went to giving to charities in the person's name or anonymously. It makes us feel like we are helping AND stops the clutter of stuff you got just cuz you put it on a list.
Or, something from a motorsports vendor.... like, oh, I don't know.... GRM!
Once I told my sister-in-law to buy me a case Pennzoil oil for my cars.
She freaked out - why? My husband likes to get dress clothes.......wouldn't you rather have a nice shirt for going out?

I've got a petty bad case of OCD which = very specific preferences which = pain in the a$$ to shop for.
After years of receiving gifts and feeling bad thinking I could have spent the money better and suspecting others thought the same of the gifts I bought them (because projection), I started a family tradition of exchanging 10 oz. silver bars.
This sounds a little impersonal because, well, it is but the stress of trying to find the perfect gift for others and the feeling of wastefulness from receiving something that isn't really what you want is elevated. I think of it as being one step better than a gift card...liquid yes but also something beautiful and real.
Purchases of $1,500 or more are not taxed so either pool everyone's money together for one big buy or stock up and hand them out over time.
Coin dealers tend to be fine with cash payments so there doesn't need to be any transaction history which will delight the "get off my lawner's" and conspiracy theorists alike on your shopping list.

It doesn't have to be stuff! Most of us already have sooo much stuff, crap, E36 M3, toys. At the age of 41, if there was something you actually needed and would actually USE, you have probably already bought it for yourself.
Ask for occasions, things to do together instead. If friends ask what you want, tell them you want them to arrange a fun evening together with them. I took my buddy to the range and then for a burger-dinner with beer for his Birthday. Another buddy gave me and my family a day on the local lake in his boat for my B-day.
For the Mrs: Ask her to plan a date night you would like. If she is anything like women usually are, she will both be super happy that you want quality time with her as a gift AND she will make sure you have a good evening.
How about a nice holster for your favorite pistol? Everyone needs more holsters and Etsy has a few billion holster makers on it

I have been using bore snakes for a while, but I always struggle a little with finding a good way to store them, label them, and keep them clean. I recently picked a couple of these up, but I have not tried them yet.
