After a months-long battle with tumors in her head and on her tongue, our 15 year old mutt finally became unable to eat or drink. We took Lunatic to the vet's office for the last time this morning. The poor pup was so emaciated you could see all her bones and she was so weak that she didn't fight or even try to get down off the table. When they put the IV in, she barely flinched. Godspeed, Luna! She turned my wife from a cat person into a dog person and she taught my friend Ken how to fetch.
In an incredibly sad turn of events, we had left our kids with my mom and dad overnight after giving them a chance to say goodbye. My sister's 8 year old dog, Fenrir, passed away suddenly overnight. Since my sister lives with my parents, the kids got to wake up to that.
Bad day to be a doggo around here.
Very sad. My condolences to you.
All dogs go to heaven. Sorry to hear.
:-( Sorry to hear that. Dogs are so kind.

I’ll give the puppers extra love for you.
The worst kind of day. Sorry for your losses.
I'm so sorry; I try to remember when I hear someone misses their dog, there was a dog who got to live with the kind of folks who'd miss them when they go.
Sorry, man. My pups will get extra pets tonight.
Sorry for your family’s loss. I lost my golden retriever 7 years ago and still haven’t been able to get another dog.
Our 1-year old coonhound is curled up in my lap right now. I just gave her a good ear scratch in honor of your pupper. Sorry for your loss.
I'm so sorry for your loss.
Sorry man. She was such a good dog. It always hurts so much to lose a pet that was part of the family for so long.
That sucks man sorry for your loss

Thank you all! It started out as a ruff New Year's Eve, but there is actually a somewhat happy ending to it all: After taking my sister's dog to the vet's office for cremation - in the same group as our dog - my dad was basically just sitting around the house until the Kenton County Animal Shelter opened up so he and my sister could go find a new buddy.
About 6 months ago, dear friend of ours took in a very well trained 6 year old black German Shepard named River because her original owners had a schedule change and the poor dog wound up being alone for as much as 12 hours a day. They asked our friend to help find her a home where she'd be able to have more interaction and the kind of life a high-energy dog needs to have. On his way back from picking her up, he stopped at my mom & dad's place for a quick visit and to let River stretch her legs a little bit and everyone in my family has been talking about that dog since that brief encounter. Our friend's other dog, however, did not get along with poor River and because she has a ton of problems is essentially unhome-able, so River has been looking for a permanent home ever since. We simply couldn't take her in because our other dog, Apollo, is also quite aged and not so stable on his legs and it just doesn't seem right to introduce that kind of energy into his well-deserved quiet retirement.
Yesterday, as soon as he heard that my sister was ready and willing to give River a home, he packed the dog in the car and took the 3 hour trip to bring her up. So now my sister - and by extension, my parents - have a new buddy, River gets a home where there will almost always be someone home with her, our friend's other dog will stop starting fights that she can't finish, and all of us got to spend the day with a licensed therapy dog and it's pretty hard to be sad with all that.

My boys and Daisy (dog) are here for my Christmas visit. I gave her some extra pets when I read this.
Sorry for your loss.
I, too and sorry about your loss but wonderful that in that turn of events River was able to find a forever home as well. I will give the fuzzies here a bit extra love tonight and I wish you peace.

I've said before in this forum that I like cat and dog threads, but not this kind. I'm very sorry. But it sounds like there is somewhat of a silver lining to the sad story.

Sorry to hear about both pets. It's never easy saying goodbye. My sympathies are with you.
On the other hand, both Lunatic and Fenrir are great names for great dogs.
