Apparently, Axl pulled it together long enough to release an album: http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/11/19/first-guns-n-roses-album-in-17-years-debuts-tonight-on-myspace-music/?referer=sphere_related_content

If he had a pair of balls, he would've renamed the band "Fat Axl."

Methinks this thing is going to get pirated massively, just out of people's curiosity.

It took so long to come out that dominant music trends have changed 10 times since Axl started writing it.

Such a pointless exercise. I can't imagine there will be anything musically relevant on there.

If anything, thats the only hope I would hold for it being good.

If music is only good because its recent its probably not any good. Good music is good regardless of when or how long ago it was released.

Popular modern music these days is TRASH, the fact that most of its so old is the only thing that makes me kinda want to hear it.

GnR has been "trying" to release this album since at least 99...why did it take so long?

Well, keep in mind, most musicians/bands have a 10 year shelf life if they're lucky. Very few artists can produce something relevant after those 10 years are up. Appetite happened in 1987. The odds of him doing something comparable w/ even Use Your Illusion aren't very good.

I wasn't talking about him making a pop record. I was talking about him making a musically relevant rock record. The 80's ended a long time ago--as did the 90's. The late 90's were a real doldrums for music--that was the time this project was started.

Here's Chuck Klosterman's review: http://www.avclub.com/content/feature/chuck_klosterman_reviews

...and here's my friend Dave's review I got in an e-mail discussion between my music-head friends. (Dave is an obscenely talented guitar player in a band called the Anderson Council who was also a Slash devotee in the early 90's)

I don't agree with Klosterman 100%, but i agree with many elements of his review... My 2Cents after 3 helpings of the tracks.

The removal of any "Blues" from the guitar work removes much of that led zep/aerosmith down and dirty rock thing that GNR had going for it....even worse...they don't even tune to E flat anymore...

Axl lost the growl and is nasal at times. the helium voice doesn't suit GNR. i'd rather hear sebastian bach at this point.

the music is way too busy and doesn't breath the way appetite and even some of the illusion stuff did. every moment of space gets taken up by some "thing" or sound item.

the production/sound has no depth...and is sterile. PRO TOOLS sucks for this current iteration of G n R

The most disappointing aspect is much of the music are the same performances from the 2001 leaks (new drums were added and Ron Thal aka "bumblefoot" is in the left speaker instead of bucket head. Truthfully, buckethead was a better fit...where's Richard Fortus? is he even on this thing or just touring?)

Song wise, the ballads are way better than the rockers. best tracks IMHO in no particular order: Street of Dreams Catcher in the Rye TWAT better Honorable Mention: Prostitute...

all in all, if the older records didn't exist, i'd like it better. its no "A-", but has its moments. his band of shredders could take a page from jerry cantrell on how to have the skills but hold back for the good of the song...

Final Thought: Someone should release/leak the 1999 version of chi dem which was rumored to be finished with navarro, fink, stintson, josh freese, dizzy reed...
