I need something similar to Word. I don't want to pay for Microsoft Office to activate Word on my comp and while like Google Docs, I need to be able to use it while on the road and don't have wifi to work on. I downloaded one a long time ago and don't remember what it was.

Open office.

Free, available for pretty much every operating system ever, and 99% compatible with everything in the Microsoft office suite.

I switched our house over to OpenOffice. My wife, who is way more proficient with Office than I am, said there was a bit of a learning curve but it does work well.

If you're running Windows, check out WordPad. It's part of the operating system so you've already got it. It's a basic word processor so it's great for actually writing content, but not so much if you're trying to do layout.

I've used OpenOffice, no complaints.

+1

It's a fork of OpenOffice with many more features and updates - it had licensing/ownership issues that were deterring contributors.

Am I the only one that tried to save a Word doc as RTF (hoping for best compatibility) and when I opened it in OpenOffice at home, was basically unreadable?

I can't remember the last time I saved a doc as RTF

Office 2007 SP2+ can open the OpenDocument files that OO.org and LibreOffice use by default. I haven't tried it though, because I use nothing but LibreOffice at home, and I only use it at work to open files MS Office won't.

Go Libre office. It is the better, more successful fork of OpenOffice. OO is almost dead at this point and has been since mid-2015.

Almost dead? I think of it as a mummified corpse that people still use for holding doors open

I use the Libre programs that were installed when I installed Mint 17. I've had 0 issues opening files from Office.

That is just how any Apache project looks at a glance ;)

I only use Libre Office Draw because I don't have Visio on my work computer.

If I had a computer that was mine and not bought by my company, I would skip MS Office and use Libre Office for everything.
