I know there are a few of you here from Indy, so help me out. I'm taking my girlfriend up to Indy on Sunday to see Cake. I'd like to find a nice, local place to have dinner before hand. Nothing crazy-expensive or with a dress code or any of that nonsense, but a nice, locally owned, good quality restaurant. She's a vegetarian, and I don't eat seafood, but we both like all kinds and styles of food. Suggestions?
I think to find somewhere like that, look to the local arts place area called Broad Ripple.
Yeah Broadripple is worth the trip, just for the...uh...trip.

Yats often has vegetarian Cajun food. In Broad Ripple and on Mass Ave. May not be your cup of tea, though...
Bazbeaux pizza, again on Mass Ave, is decent, but nothing great (blasphemy to Hoosiers, I know...).
Just for S's and G's, go to St Elmo downtown. Eat at the bar, and order the shrimp cocktail.
Shapiro's deli is excellent. On the south side of downtown and in Carmel.
Yats and Shapiro's are both excellent.
The Palamino downtown is good, and should have some vegetarian stuff. No real dress code, just don't show up with cutoffs. It's not cheap, but isn't horribly priced, either.
There's really a lot of chains around here.

How does the recommendation of St. Elmo's Steak House jive with this statement?

Shapiros that is downtown is not fancy in any way. The food is really good as are the deserts but overall it is pretty much a cafeteria style experience. Just to repeat, the food (mostly sandwiches) are really good but maybe a better lunch experience rather than a romantic dinner.

I've ate there with my brother and was unimpresses as well. He loves it though so it may just be a style thing. The atmosphere was unique (they would have their patio open now which is pretty awesome) and service was pretty good but the pizza was just.. ok (salads were good though)
there is a lot of good food in that area though however I'm not sure I'd call the restaurants "nice". There nice enough but they are more character places with good food.
You could always just get her a Hotbox pizza..
If you do make it to Broadripple you should buy this to drive home. http://indianapolis.craigslist.org/cto/2370844212.html

About the same way suggesting Shapiro's is okay for a meat-free meal. Everything there includes about a pound of pastrami of corned beef.
Suggesting good restaurants in the Midwest that only serve vegetarian and non-seafood meals is nearly impossible.
