Sorry to hear this. He was one of my favorites. He had been pretty much incapacitated for the past few years but still writing. He was great. It's been said that his song Hallelujah is considered the unofficial Canadian national anthem. I remember being in a Montreal restaurant a few years back and there was a huge portrait of him hanging from the ceiling. I really like his live concert from the O2 Arena in London a few years ago. My favorite:

Rest in Peace Leonard.
And for the love of all that is Holy, protect us from all the butchered tribute covers that we will be inundated by in the next few weeks.
PS: attention all wanna be pop stars, just because you can sort of sing every note under the sun, it doesn't mean that you can use them when you sing Leonard's songs
He certainly had a very unique style, which I appreciated.

I don't think that I'd ever heard this song before he died, but it's been on a constant loop in my head ever since. What an amazing voice. I wish I had been aware of him before he passed.

I'm another one that had never heard of him or that song. But it does get stuck in your head.
It's one of those songs that's been covered a million times and you've definitely heard at least a version of, but probably never knew who originally wrote it till now. That's why I like that video, you get to see him sing it like he meant it when he wrote it.
In reply to bluej:
I guess it's possible that I have heard it. But, I have an extremely good musical memory. I surprise myself sometimes singing a song word for word that I heard once twenty five years ago. (Today I found myself singing a song from the closing scene of the movie White Lightning, it's been a good ten years since I've seen that) That chorus would be hard to not recognize.
I knew his name but didn't really know much about him until he passed.
A friend who is a big fan told me about a Malcolm Gladwell podcast called "Revisionist History" that dissects the zig zag steps of Hallelujah becoming famous, and "genius" in general. Listened to it (the podcast) yesterday, and it was absolutely fascinating.
This was my introduction to Leonard Cohen, I think around 1986. Fabulous songwriter, covered by a great singer. Leonard, Kris Kristopherson, Bob Dylan are all greatly talented people who probably shouldn't bother making their own records. My opinion, and only mine. No offense intended, and I encourage you to love listening to guys who can't sing.
The Baroness and I decided a while ago that some version of "Dance Me to the End of Love" would be an appropriate "first" dance whenever we finally get around to getting married.

Sorry, I've never really been into ogre flicks.
In listening to some of his music, I have forgotten about this song. Something about the cord progression that is very appealing. This guy really was a poet lyrics wise:

Lol fair and neither am I.
It's probably been in over 2 dozen movies and tv shows. It shows up on Watchmen, House and I think Lord of War
