Will anybody miss them? Do they offer anything that you can't get in a Ford?

Ford is considering killing Mercury but it's not dead yet. Just coughing up blood.

Carmakers need to quit amalgamating all their brands. The reason so many of em get dead is because they just make the same damn car with 4 different grilles and sell it to their subsidiaries. Pontiac EASILY could have survived as a performance division..... Mercury could have easily survived as a "Buick" of sorts, and let Lincoln duke it out with Caddy and the Europeans. At least GM had the sense to sell Saab to Spyker.......

Just a rumour at this point, but I think the "nothing new to add" comment from Alan Mulally pretty muchs confirms it for me.

The last Mercury I can think of that wasn't also a nearly identical ford was the last generation Cougar - I think it was sold as a Ford overseas, but not here.

Milan - Fusion
Mariner - Escape
Mountaineer - Explorer
Gran Marquis - Crown Vic, but...

You can no longer buy a consumer version of a Crown Vic. All consumer versions are Gran Marquis so here it is, the end of that chassis.

Cut 'em loose. I actually commend Ford for not having released a "Sable" version of the new Taurus.

I think Mercury could survive if Ford ditched current model line up and replaced it with not-watered-down, rebadged European Fords. Yes, sales numbers would be low, but at least people wouldn't look at a Mercury and say, "why should I pay more money for the same model Ford?"

Apparently I've missed those commercials, so I won't miss Mercury a bit. I even googled to find out who she was, and she didn't even look familiar.

If Jill Wagner was included with a Mercury, I'd buy two.

Forget about the Montego? Most other people did, too. It became the Sable in 08-09.

You can't polish a turd, but, apparently, you can polish a Ford into a Mercury. Luxury, man, luxury.

Except for the Milan and Grand Marquis...Mercury doesn't have any other sedans.

In the 50' and '60s Mercury offered cars/models/bodystyles that weren't available in a Ford. Mercury offered a 2 AND a 4 door HARDTOP station wagon in the late '50s-early '60s. And Mercury used to have cars that weren't "Fords with a different grille". Look at the '68/'69 Torino and Montego, The '69 LTD and Marquis. When FoMoCo is lazy...Mercury suffers. Yet, some of the best looking cars sold as Fords were actually styled by the Mercury styling studio.

I agree, that Mercury could be viable if it (again) offered cars that weren't "clones" of Fords. Even if it means selling "Euro-Fords" or "Aussie-Fords" as Mercurys.

I'm prejudiced...my first car was a Cyclone GT.

When I was a kid my best friend's family drove a red Marauder. I remember it as being Cadillac sized and really, really cool. I've often wondered why Ford didn't let Merc have just one halo car to try and prop up the brand...
