Alright, so this is beyond frustrating and I can't find anything in a search that's been useful so I'll try here.....
I have a Razr....at some point in time there was an update that I now, no longer have access to any other map app except Googlemaps which I can't stand. Part of the reason I can't stand it is this....I was meeting someone at a restaurant today. I enter the name of the restaurant and the results show up. One of the which is a little map. Normally if I would touch that, a dialogue box would come up with 3 choices of how to display it - google maps, VZ navigator and I don't remember the 3rd. Now only Google Maps. It gives me the directions. It has a toll road....an electronic toll road. I don't have EZPass, therefore I can't use this road. However, I also can't figure out how to tell it to avoid toll roads so that I could actually figure out where I was going. Instead I had to wing-it and in that case, what purpose does Google Maps serve me? Any help with this?
I hear the Mapquest app is pretty good these days. You might try that. (I know that is not what you asked)
I've got a Razr M, and Mapquest works just fine. Have you tried getting any other map apps?

The latest version of Google maps for Android is incredibly not user-friendly. I had the "upgrade" forced on me and fortunately I was able to unload it and get the old Nav app back. I'm just hoping they'll have it all fixed by the time I'll be looking at a new phone in May or so.
The latest version of google maps integrated navigation directly into it, and many are not happy with the results. Download the earlier version of navigator, and you can control how it functions, telling it to stay off tole roads and such.
Mapquest was the 3rd I couldn't think of. That was the one I normally used. However, I can't figure out how to get back to being able to select between the 3.
Google Maps sucks. The e-toll road I mentioned was the road google was telling people to merge onto and it wasn't even opened yet. In fact it strikes me as the bridge decking, for the merge ramp, had not even ben put in place yet.
I don't have a Razr, so this may not be the issue you are having. Go to settings>apps>maps. On my phone this is how google maps is listed. Click on that and scroll down to see if it is set to open by default. I think the last update changed my preference to default to google maps. Click clear defaults and see if you get your prompts next time you click on a map result.
When I use it, the default Google Maps option is to display multiple routes, one of which uses toll roads and the other of which avoids them.
The simplest thing to do with nav systems that aren't providing the answer you want is to keep driving past the point that they told you go to. They'll spend a few minutes telling you to take a U-turn, then they give up and find a different path.
Glad to know it isn't just me. Its maddening.
I found the update streamlined a lot of things... to have it set to avoid tolls once you are on the "location to location" page (the one that gives you a few options of direction) click on "route options" then click avoid tolls.
but it sounds like the real issue is that you set the phone to automatically default to googlemaps to reset this goto settings>application manager> click settings > reset app preferences
as for GPS apps... I've used and like like GPS copilot... lets you set navigation points without data.... found it for a friend who has an android phone on a prepay call/txt only plan so offline navigation was needed...
