With my mower that is. Its self propelled. I dont know the model or anything, but I can get it if I need to. The problem is the self propelled mechanism. Im not sure how it operates, but it feels like it has a cable operated clutch that is starting to slip. It will go , and then slip and then go, and then slip, and then go and stay engaged, but it almost always slips now 2 or 3 times when engaging it. Its about 8 years old, so that sounds like a legit replacement interval. Is opening one of those like looking into an auto trans or a womans purse...ya know like opening Pandoras box? Has anyone tried to change/fix this on their own mower or is this one of those times to understand the value of paying a good trustworthy mechanic to get the job done right the first time?
Please and thanks

I've got a Husqy mower with a Honda engine, and the self-propel is just a belt drive. Squeezing the handle tightens the belt and letting it go loosens the belt enough to freewheel. If yours is anything like that it's probably a $5 belt and an hour's fix, counting the trip to the parts store.

My Honda mower had a self-propelled mechanism, but after 7 years of abuse it stopped actually propelling--I was told it was the entire drive unit that was bad and not worth fixing (3/4 of value of new?) I removed the belt to the drive unit and gutted the gear drives in the wheels and now I just push the sucker. cheaper than a gym.
And by abuse, anything it can cut down, it does. I use it to clear brush and small trees.
