I've been working security for over 7 1/2 years. Within that time I have had one 34c raise and that was years ago. The company has not taken the time or energy to purchase weapons that weren't patented over 100 years ago because the area manager will not get his bonus, nor have they made it an option to carry a non-lethal weapon which means I have no options besides my gun and my fist. For extra cash I work in a military surplus / LEO equipment store for minimum wage as well as work another job in the law enforcment spectrum when I get a chance. I have worked afternoons in the hood (interesting), daytime in the hood (busy) and graveyard in the hood (just duck and pray). Working midnights really got me looking for a job. My rule for midnights was to just go into the bulletproof shack when the gunshots start.
I have been searching for work in a relaxed manner. Had what I would consider some good interviews, but finally got a bite I am willing to take. This is a complete change, but it comes with a small pay increase and much better benifits.
I'll be working in the shipping room for a mail order pharmacy. It will keep me on my feet (that is a plus) and keep me moving. That is oppsed to sitting in a guard shack most of the day because I can't leave my post obviously. The days will start and end later which will prevent me from working at the surplus store (that is a minus). Hopefully things pan out without the extra cash from the store, but it will allow me quite a bit more free time. A three to five hour shift three days a week can really make an impact on time you could have been productive at home. This new job also has rases (oooh), paid holidays off (ahhh), more paid days off (oooh), and a plethora of other great benifits I've never experienced (aaaaahhhhh). There will be possibilities for raises and position changes as the company prefers to hire from within. I could possibly get some certifictaions I don't need on their dime.
I am not completely leaving the law enforcement field, as I am keeping my side gig, but I am looking forward to the change. I know I will have a few bad habits to kill. I'm going to try to keep track of how many times I try to rest my hand on my pistol and/or try to adjust my Kevlar.
I've still got two weeks to go here and have to get past their background check, but I don't think that will be an issue.
A well deserved change coming. I know it.
