And I didn't even know I was racing.
Short story long: I was sitting at a light on the way to work.. 4 lane road (2 each way) in my Ti and a riced out and badly running Civic hatch pulled up next to me. It was loud, it was buzzy, it sounded like it was running on 3 cylinders. I also noted it was about three different faded colours and had hood pins.
Light turns green.. I go.. not fast, not slow.. just my normal.. the Civic almost stalls and then gets going. By the time I hit third, it goes flying by me.. engine sounding like it was going to grenade as he shifted at redline so I could hear the fart cannon. As he goes by, he hits the flashers.
I could only shake my head and chalk it up to another ricer out to prove himself against a BMW that was not racing

I had a kid try and pull that on me the other night. I wasn't in a particularly good mood, so I planted it. He was REALLY pissed when he had about a fender on me, and proceeded to lose. I didn't even bother making him more embarassed, I just let it ride.

What's the significance of the flashers? Is that some universal victory sign?
I usually leave every light at the same speed. Since I tend to not lollygag, more than occasionally someone in the next lane thinks I am trying to race them. It is sometimes pretty funny.
Friday nights drive from work had me wondering whether there was a full moon. I had a kid in a SS Cobalt come by me at least 20 mph faster than me, which is fine except for the part about the other car in his lane...and about 20 feet in front of me. He cleared us both, but just barely. Then I had a lane splitting sportbike go by on 8th street. I don't really mind that, but I wonder about his intelligence, since its not a regular habit around here.
^ I had some retard do that to me last night. I'm waiting to turn left onto a 4 lane road (2 in each direction) from an unprotected left turn traffic light. I had already had to wait an entire light cycle due to the cross traffic. Its finally my turn to turn left and I have to wait for some lady in a Lexus sedan who was in no hurry to clear the intersection. I crank the wheel and accelerate quickly but not recklessly, showing my displeasure. After the turn I notice a black Charger a few cars back coming up on me pretty quickly. I'm doing 45 in a 40 in the left lane. He whips into the right lane and promptly has to slow down for slower traffic. He whips back behind me. He is so close, I can only see his roof over my tailgate. He whips back into the right lane, accelerates to probably 50 or so, and weaves between me and the car in front of him with only about 8 feet between his car, my truck and the car in the other lane. After his Fast and Furious lane changes, he takes off in the right lane at about 55 or so and in about 200 feet has to jam on the brakes for the red light. I notice the exhaust the neither stock or the factory duals. I turn down the stereo and roll my window down.
It's a V6 (probably the woeful 2.7L) Charger with limo black tint and factory V6 wheels. He sure showed me by flying by and weaving in and out of traffic! FACEPALM braaaaaaaaap as he turns right and takes off; that terrible V6 exhaust note hanging in the air. Homeboy thought I was trying to race I guess? I thought about hunting him down and embarrassing him (2011 Ram 1500 Express - 390hp/407lb ft HEMI) but I let him go....

Whenever I'm at a light next to anything that looks like it wants to race, or anything that wants to look like it races, I make it a point to take off late and slow and stay below the speed limit.
I figure when they get home, they're going to tell their "kill" story however they want. May as well make their imagination work overtime.

This.
Under Ohio law you have violated the street racing statute (a misdemeanor in the first degree) if you accelerate rapidly from a side-by-side position with another car even if you don't exceed the speed limit. Consequences can include 6 mos. in prison, $1000 fine, and a 3 yr. license suspension.
It's not worth even playing with these shiny happy people.
I have wondered about that law in regards to these ricers. If I take off normally (which is not slow, but in no way close to breaking traction) and captain slow next to me decides to make it a race... am I in violation too?
IIRC, the law is horribly written, so it comes down to what kind of mood the arresting officer is in.
I have RASR (racers against street racing) decals on my Track prep'd Civic for just this reason. I seem to have the attention of every law enforcement officer I come near when I drive it on the street (ocasionally). I truly believe these decals and the NASA HPDE stickers on the windshield have gotten me out of alot of trouble. It also helps that I don't street race too, but that doesn't stop them from giving me the old pulled you over to see what you were up to traffic stops.
Ugh. You know, this is the sort of thing I am envious of Americans for. According to this site: http://www.na-motorsports.com there are 39 states with at least 1 road race track.
Canada? B.C. has 1 at Mission. Alberta has Stratotech Park (Race City is now dead). Manitoba? Gimli Motorsports Park. Ontario gets 4 tracks. Quebec has more than three. And Nova Scotia has Atlantic Motorsports Park.
For reference: BC, where I live is 4 times the size of Texas. We have 1 road course. If I were to go, that road course is about a 6 hour round trip, 2x 49.25 ferry fares, cost of the track, gas and food. And that is assuming the car I take is street legal. Need a truck and trailer? For every foot over 20 feet in length, add 5.60 onto the Ferry fare. Getting off this Island is simply cost prohibitive.
On the island, there are 2 Paved Ovals, and 1 Dirt Oval. The closest oval offers a 500' drag strip and autocross. And once a year, Port Alberni's airport is used for a full 1/4 mile strip.
It's a massive pain in the ass, but there is very little here in the way of "Getting it off the street". Drag racers get one annual event, and road racers have to budget a $200 day when we already live in an area known for its extremely high cost of living.
Anymore, I won't suffer those ricer douche bags on the road or at their local convenience store parking lot hangout. They know sooo much more than this 'old' guy.
Ignore for best results
Never heard of RASR before now, but I like. Their website doesn't show a link for decals, anybody know where to get them?

I had only heard of it after working with Lopracer at NASA events and seeing it on his Civic.
Honestly I got my decals about a billion years ago from the SEMA booth at NOPI Nationals whilst trying to liaise with the Ricers about autoX. It was a waste of my time to try to get them interested in any kind of legitamate racing but one heck of a party. You might try via SEMA to get decals I used up all of mine on two of my cars.
OK, found this after a short but convoluted search of the net, don't know how recent this ad is but it's best I can find on decals or stickers. The logo is the same as mine and obviously one of the older ones compared to the RASR website.

Thanks for the link! We have a pretty twisty country road close to us, lots of wrecks. And bikes, too.
