Since we have been freshening up the looks of our house and re-doing rooms and such, i thought hey why not have a car themed bathroom in the basement (finished basement with entertainment room, etc) I have seen people have bathrooms with an ocean theme, animal themes, ducks themes, so why not cars?
I have some ideas already:
-Make a license plate into a switch plate for the lights (i have on in the garage and it looks killer)
-Maybe use valves for handles on the pull out drawers (on sink cabinet)
-Camshaft towel bar?
-I was thinking of hanging a few bigger pictures on a few walls too.
Any other low buck ideas? Kinda drawing a blank past that.
Old turn signals for runway/theatre lighting around the baseboards
Hubcap clock on the wall
DVD cabinet made to look like a vintage gas pump on the outside like this:
When someone says Grassroots Bathroom? I ask "1 or 2?" and either point at a bush or hand them a shovel depending on the response.
In a real response... love the camshaft towel rack idea and have a few more:
- A rotor cap makes a good toothbrush holder.
- Spot lights in a headlamp bezel make cool over-mirror lighting.
- Black and white checker tile, embed chrome badges like a Porsche crest, Vette flags and BMW Roundels, etc... by cutting/drilling out the center of a tile and mudding in the logo so its really embedded.
- Floormats instead of tub/toilet rugs
- Use power window/lock switch gear for the lights and fans

I really like these ideas. I am doing minor bathroom renovation, and I might just do it.
Use a hurst "T" shifter for the handle on the door.
One wall in license plates.

Or, buy a bunch of '50s-'60s Hot Rod (and related) magazines, scan the covers, print 'em out and do one wall like that. Or buy only the cool ones, and put 'em in interesting frames.

Though they are a little pricey, rolling tool chests can make awesome vanity cabinets. I did it once.

A piston + 1/2" bit in your drill press = cool toothbrush holder.
AN fittings for the toilet supply line.
K&N filter on the exhaust fan.
I dunno...it's starting to sound like a rat rod bathroom to me.
Upside down valve cover for holding stuff on or in the vanity.

I'd like to be able to afford a rolling tool chest for my tools.

hahaha no wife here
Ah. ok. That makes more sense. My girlfriend would crucify me if i even talked about doing half of this stuff.
Bar of lava soap in the shower. Little tree air freshener from the flusher, also a good spot for a Hurst t-handle. I really like the camshaft towel bar. You find rolling tool boxes cheap on Craigslist. A little patina might be a good thing.
Leave random tools on the sink. Stuff that would never be in the bathroom. Like a cylander honer thing, or a 4way lugwrench.

Ooh, a pegboard (or better looking hanging device) with arcane old swap meet automotive tools. You know, just for decoration.
Then again, you don't want to wind up looking like the garage/bathroom equivalent of an Applebee's so the line between kitsch and design has to be drawn with good taste and execution.

See, when I see the words 'grassroots bathroom' I think "tree" or "side of garage"
When Tim and I redid our master bath last summer, we hit the furniture consignment store for our vanity. I wanted a furniture-look vanity but wasn't willing to pay $1000+ to get it; instead, I consigned my old furniture and got an old dining-room buffet plus cash in my pocket. It looks great.
If you want more of a garage look, why not scavenge for old kitchen base cabinets (or ask at a kitchen remodeler's). Slap on some gray paint, build a top and cover it with salvaged stainless steel or aluminum, winna winna.
