Bishops are taller than Their Majesties, which is poor cricket, and bodes bad mojo.
Still cool as all get out.
I will totally do this with 460 Ford parts. Anybody got BBC valvetrain stuff? We could trade half-for-half and each have a Bowtie vs. Blue Oval board.
And, man would this set look great on an engine block coffee table. Maybe a couple camshaft lamps, valve covers to hold the nuts... I think I just planned my living room rehab.
Ok, as a USCF ranked player I say I approve. Not that it take much to be ranked. 20 games in tournament play and it doesn't matter how much you suck. Regardless, I like it!
I read that at the start of a chess game, there are 36 possible moves the pieces can make.
After 8 moves, there are more possible combinations of moves than there are stars in the universe.
Awesome..

Checkered flag seems pretty obvious - perhaps under some acrylic like the bar tops with cards in them?
Yeah, I'm not even sure why I didn't think of a checkered flag under lexan or something. It would be hard to do well, but make the black squares out of cast iron squares and the white out of polished aluminum would be cool.
Board: flat piece o' sheet metal (preferably cut out of a junked car's hood or trunklid), tape, a razor knife and a ruler, a can of appliance white and a can of Blitz Black spray paint, and about 45 minutes of time. Done and done.
I like a variation of this (with an 8x8 grid):
Or, if you could get a chunk of a roof and a little paint (but DON'T cut up this Mini):
Or, brushed stainless is pretty awesome:
