Our carpet was getting pretty beat with two big dogs. Turns out it was nearly 2 grand cheaper to go with hardwood and install ourselves over recarpeting - so we're putting in 1,000 sf of hickory.

BTW - flush cut saws are simultaneously awesome and a device from the devil.

Well the floor looks fantastic. Hear hear for your destroyers of carpet.

I'm having a hard time believing the price difference for 1000 sf unless you got a hell of a deal on the hardwood and were pricing it against luxury carpeting.

Either way, it looks very nice!

Get ready for a lot of scratched hardwood...

I lived in a place with 80 year old scratched hardwood floors... I thought it looked great. Wood certainly "patinas" a lot better than carpet.

it's funny.. 50 years ago wall to wall carpeting was a sign of luxury.. today it is hardwood

My 190 year-old wood floors look great, scratches and all. Wood gains character with age.

I'll never live in a house with carpet again. There isn't a stitch of carpet in our entire house. The floors are finished, but not sealed. We clean and wax them every few months. The color varies from dark oak to basketball court light brown. Plus you can play Hot Wheels EVERYWHERE!

I'm in the hardwood camp as well. We've removed almost all the carpet from the house. Allergies are down, house stays cleaner. It's a win=win

We got the wood for $3/sf. We gave some carpet a look - I can tell you that $12/yd carpet isn't super luxury. We have wood floors downstairs - it's oak - not as hard as hickory and has held up well with the hounds.

It's a 42" HP zz3100 - art printer - HP uses the same chassis for a bunch of printers/plotters - this one is a 12-ink/pigment artsy fartsy version (Mrs. Oldtin is an artist, I get to play with her toys).

I have hardwood floors. With pets and children it is very difficult finding a way to refinish them.

I am starting to think I'm going to have to do about a square foot at a time and cover it with a laundry basket while it dries.

My maths may be failing me, but isn't $3/sf = $27/square yard? Anyway, I still vote for the hardwood.

Hardwood has and always will be the best floor, kitchen and bath aside, then its tile, nothing beats a good tile bathroom.

your maths are correct, and $27/yd will get you some pretty nice carpet, installed and all. but even failing the bad maths, hardwood is better almost everywhere in the house.
