Grassroots Nail Polish Sports - How do i build this?

SWMBO needs a nail polish rack, and last attempt at building one yielded ugly results, i'm guessing from materials used.

We took a trip to Mendard's to see what they had that might be better, as we have some Menard's bucks to use leftover from some rebates.

This time around, looking at using Oak for all of it. We need something that will be stable enough and won't warp or have crazy gaps. I forget what we used last time, but it was awful wood.

Also: How to attach all this stuff effectively? (I don't do wood-working)

What we planned to use as the backer board:

Wood glue and nails? Or wood glue and screws? Just screws? Are these materials good? We're looking to build something that will hold a good... 300 bottles of nail polish.

Building one of these from scratch looks like work.

I wish you would have told me about this on saturday, I know how you do this. Basically, you're building a wine rack but smaller. Let me build one out of cardboard real fast and I'll show you what I mean.

Basically, you're on point. I'd so it a little differently because I lack the ability to do things simple, but that's me. The only thing I'd change is that backer, at 300+ bottles that thing is going to be HUGE and a piece of wood that thick that size will weigh more than a miata. In this case I'd count on the frame to support the structure and use some sort of pressboard laminate as a backer, like an entertainment center.

This is how I envision it. Granted not built out of priority envelope and aluminum tape, but you get the idea. I'd say something like a 1x2x.5" wood framed outside to stick the racks to. Then maybe 2" depth shelves. Supporting them is going to be a bear. You may need to drop triangle blocks under the shelves to keep them from collapsing. Then make the front guide.out of whatevers light, I'd almost go aluminum bar stock and bend it. You.can get that stuff at hobby stores and art stores cheap. Attach the guides to the sides (they don't have to be super stable, the shelf itself is bearimg the weight) and you're set.

Is the Oak i posted in the OP good?

Yeah I don't see why not. I am a fan of the dowel rod guard. I have an old house and things vibrate when you walk by. When I build one for my wife, it will have something to keep them from sliding off, maybe a lip of some sort.

Why not just get a piece of 2"x2" and drill a bunch of evenly spaced 1 1/2" holes in it?

The backer you chose is 1/2" as previously noted that is overkill and will be way too heavy. The backer will not be providing much structure it will just keep everything together and help provide stability from racking. a 1/4 or 1/8" backer is all you need.

Not sure where your skill level lies with wood, I suck with it but I have learned a few things. Mechanical fasteners exist to hold things together while the glue dries. If you arent using a good glue it won't hold up. Since I have a compressor I made the investment in a small finish nailer, it has improved my wood working game 100%. I went from not being able to build even a set of ugly garage shelves to turning this pile of wood

Use the dark brown 1/8" thick pressed board for a backer. Do the frame of the sides and shelves from the 1x3 you were looking at w/ wood dowel retaining rods at the front. You can do that w/ a hand saw and hand held drill which I what I'm guessing you're working with.

I'm curious about this as well. Is the nail polished used for some sort of art/hobby/etc? Or does she actually have 300 different colors she will paint her nails?

She's big into nail art, so.... both hobby and yes, she's painting her nails?

Even the 1x3 is overkill. I made a model paint rack out of some 1/2 inch boards I found at Home Depot. The frame and shelves are 1/2 inch and the Bach and retaining strips across the front are hard board. To make assembly easier there is a coupon in Family Handyman to get a brad nailer for $13.99. A little glue and it can be together in no time.

+1 on the dowel to hold them on the shelf. Why not eliminate the back like the first one that synthetic posted?

I'm pretty sure my wife has only one bottle of nail polish and it's the same one she had 15 years ago when I met her. I've never seen her wear it.

nail art takes a steady hand. Time to teach her to weld.

Make sure some of the oddball bottles fit. That's the only issue we have with what the wife is using now.

The wood you selected will work fine.

The backer could be thinner but it doesn't have to be. I would probably choose a piece of 1/4" oak plywood that matches the other wood and then stain the whole thing.

Glue everything and use about half as much glue as you think you need.

Nailing anything through the backer chosen will be a PITA. Nailing from the front will look bad. Nails, as stated above are just there to hold things until the glue dries. Clamps will work as well. I have even taped small things together until the glue dries. Screws will work, but you will need to pre-drill the oak to keep it from splitting.
