I know we have a few bass players here, and a lot of music fans. I found this so interesting. It took me FOREVER to listen to it because I kept pausing it to go and listen to the songs! Someday, I will buy another bass and finish learning to play it.
Ooops, forgot the link. It is in fact 100 famous bass lines, not necessarily the best. 100 Famous Base Lines
No likny. Did you mean this?

Dazed and Confused. do-doooo-doooo-doooo-dooo....
I knew a base player in the late 70's. Dave McDaniels, AKA "Disco Dave." Really good. Did a lot of studio work in L.A. He had a bunch of albums stacked on the floor about 20 ft long and a foot deep and the back of every one said "Special thanks to Dave McDaniels" or "Bass - Dave McDaniels." Played with Sonny & Cher, Sonny, Cher, etc. Then he just falls off the earth about 1979 or so.

Graham Maby is one of the unsung great utility bass players - melodic, clean, capable. I really like his work. He played all the bass on Joe Jackson's first two albums, and it's all phenomenally good. The arrangements on that album are so stripped down that Maby pretty much anchors the whole band at a lot of points. He also played bass on some of They Might Be Giants' stuff, too.
Wouldn't be a bass discussion without some Claypool, and here's one of my favorites:
Primus - Lee Van Cleef
Let's see... a few of my favorites
Stealer's Wheel- Stuck in the Middle With You When I was still playing with a group of guys from work this was one of the first songs we learned and one of the only ones that I really didn't try and blend more into the background of on the bass.
The Who- Pinball Wizard Kind of hard to hear it since it IS rather subdued, but it's a fun little riff
Cake- The Distance Nice riff that trades off back and forth with the lead and really makes the song work well.

Cobham's a drummer.
None of the bands mentioned are bass players, either. Besides, does anybody here know who Leland Sklar is?

I'm assuming it was this: http://www.wimp.com/bassmedley/

And even this guy:
They are my main influences in my own playing.
Oh, and Leland Sklar played on all sorts of stuff, including Billy Cobham's Spectrum album, one of my favorite non-Metal albums of all time. And his beard is ridiculous.
I kinda prefer a big old slap bass because I'm a redneck hillbilly.
