This is in off topic for a reason Not very motorsporty, but I know there are Smart owners/sympathizers on GRM.

I can't help it. I love Smart cars. I will walk past a new M3 or Ferrari to look at a lowly fortwo. I have been looking at localish ones for sale lately and one has popped up 3 grand cheaper than the rest. It is a 2006. From what I have read these were imported and federalized by G&K before Penske started selling them here in 2008.

The 450 cars are lighter have the small 3 cylinder turbo gas motor and the 6 speed trans and better fuel economy. They have a cool glass roof that had an inch of foam glued to it during federalization (removable I am told) and ugly US spec projector headlights.

Looking into parts availability and it doesn't seem too terrible. Providing a Mercedes dealership with the part numbers will get you pretty much anything, It does seem very expensive however. A pair of front rotors for $160? Two rear drums for $140?

Are these little things hard enough on the brakes and other consumables to make this kind of thing a real concern?

To be honest I wanted a later 4cyl car to turbocharge but this one is so much cheaper than the rest that I am having a hard time not pulling the trigger. I wonder if a boost controller could safely get a few more psi into the thing.

Know a guy in VT srill driving around on the quebec dealer drive out tag! Had it for at least three years and hasn't been caught! Turbo diesel IIRC.

In regards to the boost controller, I believe the was a Brabus tuned version that you could take cues from.

I think I have a UK magazine somewhere with a buyer guide. I'll try to dig that out - IIRC they have a couple of common problems but I can't remember off the top of my head what they are.

The most telling thing (to me) about the 450 is it used an MB built motor and the 451 went to the mitsubishi built motor. The word is that the MB motors werent good for much over 65,000 miles.

FWIW I have 105,000 on my 451.

Didn't catch this comment the first time around. The later cars (451) are 3 cylinder as well, there are no 4 cylinder smarts.

I'd volunteer for an ass-beating before I ever got behind the wheel of one of those.
