For the ROC...

We will have 2 (why not right?).

First race will be the Caterhams. 250HP, Sport Tires, I can't limit the weight reductions because they are below the minimum to begin with.

Second race will be the SBC Swap race. Please gift your car to the following person:

  • allaircooled concealer404
  • BradLTL NickF40
  • M10PSI -> graefin -> apexcarver -> M10PSI

Make sense? If you are not a regular and want to run the ROC let me know and I'll figure out a swap for you.

T.J. wrote: @Brad, your pass was very good. I was a little dumbfounded when you did it and when I watched the replay it was executed perfectly. Story of my racing day. Finish 2nd, only very briefly have the lead, and get overtaken with good clean passes by the eventual winners. Well done.

I knew you were faster, and once you got in front I really only had 2 chances to get the lead back... that was into T1 or T5... if you made it to the back straight you would leave me and I wouldn't likely be able to close the gap.

Going into T1, you were defending the inside line; but being a FWD, I also knew that you would be power on understeering on the exit. My plan was to get as far inside as possible, sacrificing speed, but giving me a bit more room on the way out of the corner to hopefully have more exit speed and get back in front.

Honestly, I am amazed it work... I figured that I would end up taking us both out and graefin would get the win.

Rules for the SBC swap race:

  • Don't paint the cars
  • You have to give them back after the race
  • Don't buy parts for the car
  • You may tweak settings (suspension, transmission, diff, etc)

The intention is that you experience what the other drivers have been doing for the series and see how you handle it, not to build your own car.

@NickF40 - I've sent the Mini on to you already. A couple tips for you. The car is much faster with the mid range turbo vs the high range, but it does have it's drawbacks. It is very peaky in it's powerband, so you'll need to shift at 6,000 rpm. It's geared for that shift point right now, which is why you see it's estimate top speed at 195.... it won't get there.

@Brad: I was indeed defending. I was off my line down the front staright with you on the outside. I braked early with the goal of hugging the inside curbing of T1 with the intent of making you go around me on the outside if you were going to pass me. Also thinking that if we had contact it seems the inside car comes out better since the outside car seems to get the ramming penalty. I was unsure of how early and how much to brake for that inside line - didn't practice that. I guess I left just enough room for you to get in there and pass me. Like I said, during the race I was a bit baffled how you managed to do it without any contact at all. I knew I slowed down more than usual, but thought I had the inside closed off. Too bad it happened so far into the race - it's a long time through the replay - if only they could be fast forwarded and rewound. I want Tivo like controls for the replay theater.

Brad, I ended up using the high range turbo yesterday. It gave me 3 or 4 mph at the end of the back straight and overall the same lap times as the medium range torque monster turbo. I figured since the track was so hard to pass a little extra on the straight might come in handy.

Either the vette series will teach me how to modulate the throttle or I'll be laps behind every race.

Graefin, I'll send you the Marcos tonight. The settings are wacky right now, I would reset to default and start over for the Ring.

Looking forward to the Elan. I have one already modified for SBC, but didn't use it based on my lack of throttle modulation resulted in too much spinning. I have gotten better at this game since the start of the series so maybe I'll be able to keep it pointed in the right direction more often now.

I love the sound of your Celica Ben. Between you and Graefin you both took off like a shot at the start. In my replay you two bounced off each other fairly hard right at the turn in for T1. Strange that with these online races there is essentially 7 versions of reality. I'll post a picture of what I saw.

It's got a nice metallic "wail" to it, doesn't it? I think i'm spinning it to about 8500rpms.

I'm surprised i moved at the start... i spun all the way until i hit about 65mph at the start. I have a feeling i should have been using the high range turbo all season instead of the mid-range on a full-built motor. The midrange power is just too much for this chassis, i fear.

I think after this series, i'm going to throw a wing and some slicks on it and terrorize some of the online rooms.

First of all, congrats on Brad for the win. Most people would not pick a car optimized for the last track of the series, but that is just the kind of commitment that Brad has. I have to say, my gf has watched a few of the recent recent races, and has always pulled for you, being the obvious underdog. She was quite pleased and proud to see you pull out a win.

SBC: As I am sure you noticed, I was going for the Camera Car approach. I tried to watch as much of the race as possible without getting in the way. I started out by following Apex and the sliding Corolla (Celica... whatever) around. After the Celica saw a squirrel and stopped to look, I followed Apex around hoping he could catch up with the lead pack. It was obvious he was having a hard time with the car, there were a lot of control movements going on.

At one point I pulled over and let the leaders catch up and watched them for a bit. It was apparent the Brad had the an answer to that track, he seemed to kept TJ at a pretty consistent distance. After that I stopped and let the fantastic sliding Celica catch up (I think he was 2 laps down at the time) and proceeded to play "let see if we can be in the same space at the same time". For whatever reason we were both ghosted to each other (despite being on the same lap), this made going close quarter with tail happy Corolla much easier.

MX5 was a bit of a disaster for me. I think I tried to over prepare. I messed with the car setup and even killed the downforce on the wing in hopes of getting more speed and a bit more oversteer on the sweeper. That didn't work out so well. I knew it was not good when I could not break the top 3 in qualifying and I was about to step out and put some wing back in when the start warning came (I should have risked it).

I started the race following the pack. That went OK until some one spun on the inside of T5, that caused a general slow down, I tried to check up, but could not do it quick enough and slide into the side of Greafin. I am pretty sure I did rear damage to him (strangely I did not get penalized for that), sorry about that Greafin. I followed him around a bit and could see he was having issues. Even with his issues it was still almost impossible to pass.... eventually got bored.. hit a wall... bla bla...

I did end up in the lead for a bit, and I did get to see Apex mess up TWICE, but the race was a bust for me. NOT fan of that track for the MX5s. It is almost impossible to pass cleanly there. The draft does nothing and the only real passing corner is 1 and you pretty much screw the guy you are passing if you cut inside them.

@aircooled: It was me that caused that pile up at T5 on the first lap. I braked too late and ducked to the inside of a sliding graefin. I knocked into him and suffered no damage. I could've dashed off down the straight in the lead I think at that point, but I pulled over into the grass and to let you, apex and graefin by. Didn't want to take a position that way and felt bad for the contact. I under prepared for the MX5 race - meaning no prep at all for the most part.

What happened around T1-T3 between the three of you that allowed me to catch up? Not sure what lap it was, but it was early in the race. I came off T1 and saw the three of you up ahead. By T4 I was with you all, and then ended up in 2nd. At that point I made the decision to stick around for the entire race and give it a go.

We'll see, we'll see. I kind of specialize in "difficult" cars. That one is definitely "special" and "difficult".

I will get the Europa out to you tonight so you can be tortured... ah, I mean get some practice with it.

Some tips for you: I left the suspension a bit soft. It doesn't seem to affect speed much but it helps a LOT with bumps. Not sure I can suggest you mess with the suspension at all. It will oversteer constantly no matter what you do there is really no way to dial it out. You could try massive toe in on the rear, but I suspect that will have some weird side effects. You might want to take a bit of camber of the rears, it will give it less grip in the corners, but makes it a wee bit more predictable.

When you drive it, do NOTHING quickly. Slow steering, slow application of gas, slow application of brakes.... smooth all the time, otherwise it bites. ALWAYS brake straight, unless you are super confident (this is going to be an issue in some parts of the ring). There will be NO drifting in this car, understand? The best way to brake it I have found is to underbrake, just drag the brakes a bit a fair distance before you would normally brake (this is the only way to brake and turn).

The car is obviously plenty fast when driven as above and even faster when you carefully push it a bit. It obviously comes out of the hole very fast (so practice your starts) and it's main advantage is being able to accelerate out of corners much better (seemingly) then the other cars (that's were it gets its straightaway speed).

That said, Nurburgring is probably a bad track for this race. Hard to memorize, very narrow, and lots of walls... mayhem ensues...

Hrmmm... braking and gassing slowly will be an issue with my controller setup.

Honestly, though, it doesn't sound that much different than the Celica, and i've logged many MANY hours on the Ring.

We'll see what happens.

You'll get the Celica tonite as well. Maybe if everyone is up for it, we can have ROC practice tonite?

Oh yes, that was interesting, I was a bit surprised myself.

I came around turn 1 and saw Apex (uncharacteristically) spun out on the inside after turn one. The dust up slowed us down, but I pushed through when I noticed he was ghosted. That is how I ended up in First for a bit, but eventually caught a bit of dirt coming out of T4 and spun.

So, a bit of a spin fest that worked out for you.

The big difference (judging by what I have seen the Celica do) is once it starts sliding you are GONE. It is very difficult to recover from a slide, it loves to tail whip (makes for some great off track spin displays though). My only suggestion for a slide is countersteer as quickly and violently and briefly as possible and leave a small amount of gas in... and pray of course.

Brad: Scoring question.

Not that it matters, but how are you handling the drops. I noticed that you gave me a drop in the first race for SBC, because (horror of horrors) I finished 2nd. I figured you would drop my Indy score, since I did not run that race (which of course makes it zero).

Like I say, doesn't matter at all, just curious.
