You can also say that some of the older cars, say 10+ years old have a more visceral driving experience, especially if you have the budget or your driving habits allow you a fun car, like my E36 for sale.

My DD is 15 years old, an upgrade from the previous 18 year old.
I went from driving our '06 RAV4 with 130k to our '01 Mustang with 280k three seasons out of the year. It's worked out fine so far, but in all fairness I have a backup vehicle on any given day if I need it. I drive about 65 miles per day to work and back.
I daily drive a 52 year old ford
Consider me an outlier on the graph.

My last 4 cars have been paid for cash and the most expensive was $2K.
My wife's vehicles on the other hand . . . .
I just did this, sold my '13 FR-S and bought a 1990 Miata with 193k on it.
No regrets. Now all the money I was spending on payments can go to fun stuff. And the insurance is lots cheaper.

I'll go the other way, I like driving a new car. I also basically live in my car thanks to having an outside sales job, if I had a different occupation and was simply A to B commuting I'd have no problem with an older DD rig.
Part of it is I just really don't like most cars made in the first decade of the 2000's... Feel's like a return of the 1980's with better emissions, worse mpg's, and more horsepower. Lots of half baked technology and ideas that were being beta tested on owners and weren't fully realized until the second or third iteration of the car/tech. Cars have gotten amazingly better in the last 3-5 years...
I've wanted to ditch my Mazda 3 (and its payment) for a little while now, but I really take for granted what a great car it has been. I have two years left on my loan, and if all goes well, I plan on paying it off and driving it for as long as I can. Sure, it's not as fuel efficient as the new 40mpg compacts, but maintenance is cheap and it is easy to work on. Besides, if I ditched it for another older car, I'd miss the Bluetooth integration and audio streaming, its fuel computer and built-in maintenance reminders, and more.
