I just got a message accross the top of my window telling me that I.E. was blocking this website (GRM forums) from trying to download files to my computer. I find it hard to belive that GRM would intentionaly try that. Has GRM been infected?

I suspect your craptastic browser is infected with something that is trying to download files.

Possibly this. Browsers also try to download files if they don't recognize the filetype, could be a benign error on the GRM site.

This forum is actually one big canoe. They lure us over here with talk of cars and crap like that then infect us all! At least that's what I told my wife about that "Little Bo Peep and the Naughty Detective" picture she found on the computer.

I HAVE been seeing some normally legit adservers being hit with infected ads.

PS - It's uploaded, not downloaded. Their computer uploads to, your computer downloads from. (/geek)

Yea, I've seen some DL attempts too- the google ads have something to be desired for.

What version of IE? Also, if you can generate it again, post the exact error message (....all the text of it, including error codes and such.)

both my machines are 9, and it's a header that says that it's being stopped. In IE.

When it happens again, I'll post the text.

Also: is this happening on any forum page, or on specific ones? I've seen that happen when people hotlink photos or smilies (especially smilies) from disreputable sites.

For what it's worth, I was just at sccabb.com and one of the ads tried to load (alphabetsoup).js.

Never ever ever allow any .js files to load.

If i had my way, all Javascript would be eliminated, period, but most websites are designed all cutesy and require it for navigation. (I guess the web designers feel that mouseover buttons and animations are more important than your computer's security)

knurled, generally what you want to block is third-party javascript (and cookies, for that matter). most times the site's own stuff is benign. GRM, for example, has some js that handles voting, some for photo galleries, etc. just stuff to make things work. It's the javascript that's coming from somewhere else that's dodgy. Ad networks, in particular, are both pretty unethical on their own, and completely insecure fat targets for neer-do-wells.

and flash. even seemingly benign flash can call and load all sorts of stuff.

Ad block is your friend in that respect. Corrupted ads can't wreck your computer if they never are loaded in the first place.

I know what you're saying about Javascript being part of most forum software for many features, but it doesn't ever try to load files onto your computer. Generally, forums are a bit more secure than ad servers.
