Thinking about making our own woodsplitter. Anyone have any experience? What sort of piston is needed? Valve? Engine size? Anyone have any ideas?

take a look at places like northern equipment see what they use - I'm thinking something like a 4-5 ton ram should do it. You might get away with a 6hp engine
I suppose it's technically not a splitter, but it's very Grmey, and if you don't swing it like a bitch, you should be able to split whatever you want.
The hardware store where I worked back in the day sold those Sticklers. They were so unusual we had a hard time selling them, but once we had a "feild day" where customers could bring a load of wood and we would split it for them. Whenever the hydaulic ram wouldn't crack a knot, we'd roll it over to the bosses truck, outfitted with one off these, and it would pull right through everything we handed it.
An idea ahead of it's time.. plus you couldn't drive anywhere while it was attached to the vehicle...
tractor supply if you have one around has all the parts(minus steel for the frame) and has a diagram in their store in the hydraulic aisle of how to build it.

Hard wood or soft wood? How much wood do you want to split? 15 ton to 20 ton for most people. % ton are the basement set ups around here

Both hard and soft. My grandpa has an old montgomery ward 10 ton and most of the time it does what I need. 15 or 20 should get what I need.

Mine has a 8 ton HF air over hydraulic ram. There has only been maybe 2 or 3 times it has not split a log, and that was on like a 80 year old hickory tree, and once on a hundred year old oak. I've probably put 4 cords through it.
