Ehh. I enjoyed them, partially BECAUSE they were steaming piles of cliche ridden crap. Sometimes life would be simpler to navigate if it were more that way. I enjoy the 80's retro stuff, but mostly because I miss the hopeful, simple mindset I remember from being a kid then. I don't think that had anything to do with the 80's, I think that's just being a kid - and that's what drives most people's nostalgia.

As a angst-riddled younster of 14 when Breakfast Club came out, I thought it the was the most brillant movies of my young life and defined our generation. Now I watch it and wanna punch myself for thinking the whiney characters were any form of spokesmen.

However, Ferris Bueller's Day Off still speaks to me on a depper level than ever before when I was younger.

I mean, who cannot emphathize with just needing a day off?

Breakfast Club had the latter effect on me when I saw it in the 80s, as well as blatantly trying to reinforce the social stereotypes that some people thought everyone had to fit into.

Ferris is probably the least offensive of the movies, but still... whiney characters.

I find being an adult a whole ton easier than being a teenager. In a lot of ways it is more fun, too.

I do agree with you there, Brett. I was born in 1970.. so came of age in the 80s.. I think they would have been a LOT more fun if I been born in 65

Amen to that! Of course, most people would say I act more like a teenager than an adult, but YMMV ;)

Diva, the movie -- antidote to '80s crap film (in French). It's a thriller:

It's not a car movie, but this one's in it, as well as some cool luxury exotics smashed up from accidents:

I don't like opera (there's some singing in it -- a few minutes here/there) but I dug this movie.

The 1980's was the decade I spent in my 30's. That's when I finally did start growing up.

I can't quite put my finger on it, and I'm not kidding when I say this- there is something really amazing about that movie and that chraracter's approach to life. I wish I could manage it half the way he does. I love that movie.

So, I get he's a character in a movie, but who wants to bet if he were real he'd have grown up into a super successful dude. Maybe even the Sausage King of Chicago.

In the early 70's, we used to listen to Dr.Demento on KMET, 94.7, before he got syndicated. He had a 3 or 4 hour show, with the top ten in the last hour. I later met a guy that did a show or two with him. He recorded them in his garage. Anyone remember that song about making love in a Subaru? So many others.

Oh, I spent most of the 80's at sea. And I refer to the 90's as my "lost decade."

I was born in '71 so I grew up in the 80's as well. Feels a little weird knowing some of the cars that came out while I was in high school are eligible for classic and/or antique tags now. And some are in my driveway. And my skinny ties are still in the closet.

As for the John Hughes stuff, are we talking just directing/producing or writing too? In addition to Ferris, I enjoyed Uncle Buck, Christmas Vacation, The Great Outdoors, Planes Trains & Automobiles, Weird Science, and Mr. Mom. Granted John Candy is in a bunch of them, really making those movies.

Gamby, as for the Benetton sweatshirts, my wife was a metal chick. And she can still pull the look off.

Holy cow, someone else has heard of this movie! Loved it..I remember A&E would show it in French w/subtitles, and later on with an English dub. Taught me to love subtitles forever more. That scene where the Vietnamese chick's godfather laughs at himself for being too serious about buttering the bread..the English voice actor made a mistake, and played it as serious.

I need to go find it on disc..like appleseed said about Al's "UHF"..my VHS is old enough to drink.

Man, I just don't get Bueller. It's not a bad movie, I just never got why so many people thought it was so fantastic. "Top Gun" is another one like that..everybody around me was just crazy about it, and I just didn't see it.

I actually coined a term in my head for movies like that..I call em "Rocky movies" after the first film I ever saw like that. Well acted, well cast, well shot & well written films about people or subjects I just don't give a berkeley about.

Only thing that bothers me is that she's straightened her hair to play the "modern" mom on her current sitcom.

I should admit that she's only 6yrs younger than me..one of the great things about being an older guy is that your horizons expand about stuff like this.
