I've been doing everything I can to not get depressed in between losing the cat and still not finding real work so I actually pulled my PS2 out today for the first time in months. I forgot how mind-numbingly awesome GT4 is.

Buy the Alfa Duetto Spider in the classic lot under Alfa, add the Stage 1 N/A package, "chip", Stage 2 Intake/Exhaust, Stg 1 clutch, Stg 3 flywheel, 1.5-way LSD, Stg 1 suspension, and Stg 1 lightening. Then hit the Nurburgring in the World Tracks for a "track day". What joy! The sounds are almost spot-on to the Graduate and it's fast enough to do ~125 on the big straight and 9.30's with my ham-fists.

Sigh, I needed that.

I got sick of GT4. Every front wheel drive car in that game can barely turn no matter how much I tune the thing. The only way to get it to turn is put it on race tires.

Man I know how that is, I played a lot of GT4 and Black to relieve stress when I was out of work last year.

It really does help, also good in the summer when i was jonesing for a nice fast drive and premium gas was almost $5 a gallon.

My favourite cars for the ring are the Amuse carbon R34 and the Caterham fireblade.

I hope and wish you well in finding a job soon.

or for N-ring fun, try a fully modded (with aero and SS race tires) viper SRT 1000hp and sticks pretty decently

I love the Amalfi track in GT4. I like driving it in rally or mid-engined cars, like the STi or Stratos

I've been playing GT5 Prologue a lot lately. I've been trying to tame the oversteering, tire-annihilating beast that is the C6 Corvette Z06 with all driving aids off and the regular controller (no room for a proper gaming wheel in my tiny bedroom). Wen I get annoyed with that, I switch over to the LanEvo IX and go bombing around the Eiger Nordwand track- very fun with all the hairpins and elevation changes.

I love the 04 GTO with about 510HP. The Grand Sport C4 Vette is fun with a Supercharger. I just built up a C5 Z06 but haven't driven it yet. I like the ITR with Stg2 N/A. I like the older stuff best though, like the Honda S600, the Isuzu Ballet, the AE86, the Fiat 500, the Jensen, the 85 RX-7, the 89 Miata, and so on in that fashion until all humans have been eaten...

My fastest car right now is a spec'd out Ford GT with 700HP and the spoiler. Does 9.40's in the 1/4 and tops out at 265 on the same gearset.

Thanks Autolex!

I agree with the "own car" thing. I have an 85 RX-7 setup like my 83. It's not the same chassis/generation and the game car makes a lot more power, but it also weighs a lot more. I got it within a tenth of a second accuracy on the strip to my real one. The game says mine should do a 15.2 now, and I'm drag racing Saturday, so we'll see!

I would recommend all of you to go out and buy a game called "Enthusia" for the PS2.

You can pick it up for (seriously) - 3.99 used from Gamestop.

The physics are way better than GT4 would even dream of. And it's a lot of fun.

I had a lot of fun with a 911 with worn out race tires (not fast, but fun). It really refreshed my "drive with the ass end" technique I tend to use when auto-xing my tail heavy car. I totally agree with the Alfa though, I was amazed at how ass-happy that car is.

Enthusia is definitely FAR more challenging than GT4!! Driving a high HP rear drive car takes a LOT of concentration, and LOTS and LOTS of throttle control (wheel with a gas peddle is a MUST). It is probably as close to simulation as you will find. Unfortunately since you have no car "feel" as you would in an actual car it is actually harder than real driving.

A strange thing I noticed with GT4 (and would certainly apply to Enthusia) is that if I did a race with a runny nose, my nose would not run the entire time I was racing!! Pretty crazy, I guess it indicative of the amount of concentration that is sometimes required.

My favorite car in GT4 was the classic BMW 2002tii. Pumped up the tuning on everything and used it for the road rally stages. That was a blast.

By chance I happened to be in a gamedepot, and while unable to locate a copy of Enthusia, they did have GT4 there for just a few dollars.

Is it me, or do the physics of GT4 stink when compared to GT3? I liked the greater number of tracks and cars and such on GT4, but trying to drive them was absolutely horrible. Get slightly off the centerline of the track and you've got no power, no speed, and the transmission will not shift. If you've got an automatic, wait patiently for it to gradually shift down, and then very gently restart the car. No drifting, no e-brake response, no ability to snap the rear end free, even on gravel and dirt.

I went back to driving GT3, it wasn't me, I could do all those things just fine in GT3.

Just because i'm a fanboi, i heartily enjoy the Celica ST205 GT4 in that game. VERY tossable, and you can use it for pretty much anything.

The MR2 Spyder is a hoot, too.

I have noticed that as the graphics got better in the GT series, the game play tended to get worse. I used to own GT1, but still own 2, 3, and 4. Haven't played any of the PS3 versions, but it seems the actual driving physics peaked with the second game, (can't remember what playin the first was like), and steadily got worse. I still enjoyed the later games for the reasons you listed, cause let's face it, it's car pr0n, but for actual racing, I do not consider the GT series of late to be the benchmark.

For the PS2, go with Enthusia, or use the backwards compatability to play GT2. For XBOX and XBOX360, Forza series owns. I sincerely hope that GT5 offers game play to go with the eye candy. If it does, Sony will likely sell me a PS3 on that game alone.

My idea of stress reduction is a R1 car around the ring or Laguna Seca in Forza 2. Oh, good times.
