Boo- just play on XB1. I bet we could make you a millionaire inside of a day.
Playing online on PC is frankly stupid. Especially since they just gave it all away for free. Too many modders and cheaters who can get YOU banned for no reason and stay clean themselves.
On Xbox one, you could go from zero to millionaire inside of an hour with us all legit.

A. PC was free.
B. Getting a Xbox 1 is not free
C. purchasing GTA on XBone is not free
4. PC was free.
5. Free > not free

Getting banned by another idiot for trying to play makes it just story mode. Which was spectacular and worth playing, but kinda defeats the point.
Hell, my PC account was banned and I never even took it online.
Rockstar's anticheat isn't just broken, it's backwards.
If you are insistent on playing online though, look into FiveM servers.
In reply to RevRico :
I understand the risks of that but buying an xbone a copy of the game and for a gold account isn't in the cards for me. I figured I'd get the PC version since it was free and see if I could reconnect with some folks. Worse case scenario I get banned and just go back to not playing.
How does GTA V even work online? From my understanding its kind of a sandbox (no real objective)? I haven't played multiplayer GTA since GTA 1 & 2.

You're basically right.
Synopsis- you drop into Los Santos with no money, no cars and no guns. Your goal is to....do whatever you want to. Some people become deathmatch specialists. Some are grinders. Some are shiny happy people I mean griefers.
You can really do whatever you want. Some things are locked behind level walls (special colors for cars, some missions, guns, armor, some clothes) but beyond that, do you. I tend to be a grinder and a collector. I have an absurd number of in-game cars - and it's cost me a lot of money to get there. Rico and I will spend most of our evenings running missions to get the most cash we can to buy the next stupid thing. There was a week not too long ago where I think I bought 30 cars just to see what did the best wheelie. There is trophies and stuff for completing objectives (killing x number of people) but there's no real driven path. There's several outlines of stories (most notably on the heists) however there isn't any identifiable end game at least right now.
Tldr-find something you want to do and do it.
