I don't quite understand this sort of idiocy. 110 in those cars doesn't feel much different than 75. It's one thing hittig triple digits in a K-car, that E36 M3 is exciting, but in an exotic? Go find a track where you can go 150 at least.

Interesting, I hadn't heard about that. There are an amazing amount of exotic cars in the Twin Cities area, but they are rarely seen except at events - this must have been some sort of club meet.

Possibility that it was some kind of Gumball thing? Or just a bunch of rich shiny happy people playing racecars on public roads?

I think they were at a car show at the Chevy dealer in Delano.. I saw a few of them there as we were driving by a couple of hours before we saw them being talked to..

Huh. So it's not just Mustangs?

In reply to Tom_Spangler:

It doesn't appear that any of them drove through the crowd. I see a lot of Lambos and such riding around Manhattan and wonder how quickly stop and go traffic gets old in them aside from hearing yourself echo off the buildings. That's probably always cook.

The Minneapolis newspaper ran an editorial today about this, they didn't mince words.

The dozen witless wonders who decided to turn a Twin Cities interstate into a racetrack last weekend no doubt can afford the fines that should soon be coming their way. But Minnesotans who have to share the roads with these idiots can hope the dollar amounts are sufficient to deter any future life-threatening stunts by this group and other owners of exotic cars.

In case you missed it, the drivers of a group of 12 cars that included two Lamborghinis, a Ferrari and a Maserati were stopped by the Minnesota State Patrol Saturday afternoon after they were clocked at speeds of more than 110 miles per hour on Interstate 394 just west of Louisiana Avenue in Golden Valley. Drivers of another 12 or so cars that were part of the pack have yet to be cited.

One can only guess what goes on beneath the thick skull of someone who would endanger not only themselves but also innocent motorists by turning a major interstate into their own version of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Very little, we would guess.

The positive takeaway from this story is that the State Patrol stopped the dense dozen before anyone was hurt. It was more than a little troubling, however, to learn that troopers have seen this type of organized stupidity before.

Interstate 394 as well as Hwy. 280 in St. Paul are hot spots for owners of fast cars who want to test their limits — and the safety of other motorists, said patrol Lt. Tiffani Nielson. She speculated that the group used Facebook to organize the dangerous cruise and that it planned to post live video of it on the site before troopers spoiled the fun.

The 12 men, ages 24 to 66, were cited for reckless driving, and they will have to appear before a judge to answer the misdemeanor charges. It’s a shame that Minnesota’s restrictions on cameras in the courtroom would likely prevent anyone from shooting video of those appearances.

The 10 Twin Cities-area men and two North Dakotans — some of whom were members of an invitation-only club called Minnesota Exotics and Supercars — violated the Midwestern sensibilities of two states on Saturday. Our hope is that the next time they get behind the wheel, they’ll keep in mind that “Racing in the Streets” is a Bruce Springsteen song — not a way of life.

Send them to try that in Ontario. 110 MPH is fast enough for roadside confiscation by the apprehending officer.

The funny thing is, these cars, at a mere 110, are probably as safe as the average soccer mom SUV at 55.

Safe for who?

Safe for me on a race track. All of these cars should be given to me for safety testing. It's for the children.

The cars would be fine... it's the reaction times and skill of the meat puppets behind the wheel that are usually the problem.

This is 100% true. Less than 65, and you're dead meat.

Which is the same for Suzy soccer mom in her 5000+ lb SUV. The average driver has berkeley all for reaction times and are driving around at the limits of their abilities even at the speed limit.

I've driven triple digits in my E38. It's as safe or safer than my Suburban at 70.

These cars stop and steer so much faster than an SUV that even with an average reaction time, the end result at 110 is the same or better than a typical clueless driver in an Tahoe at 55. But the newspapers are all off in a tizzy about how dangerous a 3000 lb car with huge brakes is at 110. Did they actually cause accidents? I'll bet there were more accidents that day in that town in average cars than there were in exotics. You say that the meat puppets driving are usually the problem. "Usually?" What's the percentage that that's true? Are they a real threat or just a perceived one? Is the percentage greater than or less than the regular drivers around them (which is 3% in actual practice)?

We've all become too scared as a society and have decided that a McLaren is identical to a minivan in ability and that in ANY car, regardless of ability or type, the (non-engineering generated) posted speed limit is perfectly safe, and that even one mile per hour over that and you're automatically recklessly endangering all around you and everyone WILL in fact die. It's simply not true.

Have people exceeded their skill level in an exotic? Of course. Has it been proven that it is INEVITABLE? Of course not. And yet that's exactly what we're doing. It's like the Mustang memes. A small percentage are making the greater population look bad.

Meh. I'd be willing to bet the vast majority of us here have probably done those speeds on the street on at least a few occasions driving cars 1,000,000% sketchier than even the lowliest of that group.

I think I agree that the gotcha nature and outrage of this story is overwrought, likely due to these cars being exotics. I suspect there are pockets of "normal" traffic that exceed 100mph in many metro areas every day. Anecdotal evidence I have observed behind the wheel certainly suggests it every time I get on the highway.

Yes, but I suspect we didn't do it in convoy, in traffic and in cars that are anything but subtle.

Rarely have I seen where money = driving skill and since we don't have licensing requirements like Germany or even much of Western Europe, I don't see where driving like that on public roads will ever be appropriate.
