Handgun Question

Just got my CCW here in Northern California a few months ago (after many, many,many months of waiting).

FWIW, I can have up to 3 handguns listed on my permit. I already owned a S&W M&P 9mm before applying, so I listed and qualified with that. It is a little bulky, but will conceal just fine under anything more than a t-shirt.

For my second handgun, I was set to buy a Springfield XDS-9mm, but I could not get it in time for my qualification and final issuance appointment. I ended up with a Glock 19 w/ NIB-X coating (easiest to clean gun ever, fyi). Will hold 10+1 w/ California mags, and 15+1 w/ standard mags. It easily conceals w/ an IWB holster, simple and super reliable.

Still might add the XDS before my next renewal, but for now I am happy.

You need weapons on your permit?! I can carry a .22, a DE50, or a goddamn AK47 if i can conceal it!

I prefer my .45, though.

^ we don't have to conceal anything. We can open carry anything we damn well please, any how we damn well please. I can carry it taped to my forehead, or on a necklace around my neck if I feel like it.

My current pair of carry pieces are either the Taurus or a Springfield Loaded 5". Yes.... I can easily conceal a full size 1911.

We can open carry w/o license, too (pending ordinance restrictions). I prefer to conceal.

We still have to have a license. In fact, our "permit" is actually a LTCH. I also prefer CC over OC.

I have my CCW and carry a Ruger LC9 with the integrated red laser. Nothing says "stop" like having a laser pointed at you.

Its a 7+1 and if you go through all 8 you really suck and need to hit the range (or start running).
Remember, if you want more stopping power, you can always look at different types of 9mm shells. Lots of options there.

Yeah, we have to list the weapons on the permit (make, model, and serial #). You also have to do a range qualification with each one. Right now they are not even accepting modifications to your permit (change which handguns are on it), you must wait till you renew, which is every 2 years.

I am in Sacramento county in CA, I know it varies from county to county too. It was alot of hoops to jump thru, but I am glad it is all done for now.

Either way, always good to be in compliance. Just qualified with my work weapon. Rapid fired 50 rounds and kicked my captains ass.

EAA/Tanfoglio makes a gun called the Witness; made in Italy and based on the CZ75 design. The make a "carry" size that has a 3.6" barrel...whereas the full size is a 4.5". Either has a 16 round mag. in the 9mm flavor...though the gun can be had in .380, 9mm, .40, .45 or 10mm. They make "kits" to convert from one size to another on the same frame too. They go for about $300 (I paid just over $300 shipped for a full-size poly frame, shipping included).

Tap some holes for a Blackhawk holster and voila! Very well done setup.

Make sure its in a good spot and manageable for an emergency quick draw.

A .410 isn't exactly a 12-gauge. You'd be better off firing .45 Long Colt out of a Judge--way more energy than a .410 shot shell. And if you're going to do that, you'd be better off not buying a Judge in the first place.

OP: based on your requirements, the HK USP Compact 9mm or P30 might be a good choice.

How in the world did you get a CCW in California. I legit want to know, even when I was buying cars all the time and carrying tons of cash around, the state would never grant one.

I have met only one person in SoCal that has a legal CCW and he was a state attorney working on cartel cases.

I'm left handed, and the cubby is on the left side of the wheel. It would be perfect for me. It's also a good reachin' spot if the window is open and I'm outside, not to mention you'd never know it was there if I didn't tell you.

This. The Gen4s have a replaceable backstrap for different sized hands. I recently discovered an aftermarket beavertail that also changes the grip angle to be more "1911ish." I went from liking my G19 to loving it.

Plus it's tough to argue with 15 rounds in an easily concealable package.

I'll argue with it. The 23 holds 13 and is in the same package, but S&W 40 instead of 9mm.

When the new county sheriff got elected here in sacramento a few years ago, one of his big points was opening up the ccw application process. He basically came out and said, "we don't have enough officers, so the more ccw holders, the better".

The hardest part of the application was getting an initial interview appointment. They release a few months worth of interviews at a time, on an online scheduling site. They fill almost immediately, so you almost have to check the sight daily. Once you get past that, it is mostly down hill from there, just a lot of waiting. I starting looking for interview times, October of last year, got the interview in March, was issued the ccw this October.... So yeah, it took a little while!

I get some SF guys comming thru my FRA from time to time and the CC topic usually comes up.

The answer's alway's Miat. . . er, I mean. . . Glock .45 auto. One guy said he saw one dropped in the mud, run over by a 2 1/2 ton and still fired.

They have a perfectly good safety. . . if you don't want to shoot something, keep your booger hook off the bang button!

The Judge is a good idea but I really don't like it. The grip is just too small.

Rock Island Armory 1911s are pretty nice.

I gave up handgun ownership when I moved back to NJ.. so I am a little out of the loop. Is there still a "shortage" of ammo going on? If there is, I would try to find something that uses ammo that is not quite in short supply.
