Yes, the car as produced was a E36 M3box. So was everything else at the time. The main difference is that we in the US never got a performance version, so most people associate it with E36 M3box.
Nostalgic thought for cars that were crap when new never ceases to amaze me. I had the dubious honor of not only having use of a bare bones 76 Chevette (only options were a kickin AM radio and a rear seat ... yes you read that correctly) but also a 71 Beetle as family cars while starting to drive in high school. The Vette stranded me by stripping the teeth off its timing belt at 60k miles. Fortunately for my folks the 1.6 was a non interference motor. The Beetle was a treat in Wisconsin winters. You had to be able to steer and shift and continually scrape the inside of the windshield so you can see out when it was below freezing.
I really like modern cars better than those turds.
