I remember someone on here recently mentioned they'd received a "new" product from Amazon that appeared used, which seemed odd especially with Amazon's tendency to incinerate returned goods. But a couple days ago it happened to my mom too, and with about the worst possible thing.
She ordered a 2-pack of high-end baby bottles to my cousin as a gift, she'd already bought 2 of these packs for my sister's kid in the past with no issues. But on this one, when the package was opened it didn't look new, and the bottles inside had clearly been used and not that well cleaned. I got a good look at them myself.
I thought this might be a new development and started thinking about which journalists might be interested in this, but after doing some research it turns out that it's been happening for years:

Apparently some Amazon warehouse workers have been tasked with inspecting returned items to determine if they're good enough to be resold as new, and they're pressured to keep inspections under a minute and not throw out too much. Oddly it seems that this has been happening in the background while the peak era of "incinerationgate" came and went.
So keep an eye out, don't assume any new Amazon goods are actually new, no matter what it is.
