I'm know most of y'all will have seen this, but I watched it for the first time only recently, and it's pretty damn cool. Noir-style sci-fi animation with a bangin' soundtrack by Black Sabbath, Devo, Blue Oyster Cult, Cheap Trick and a bunch of other bands.

Anything similar worth checking out? Interesting/"cult" films with a music connection, I guess. Repo Man comes to mind, as a film with a similar vibe.

If you like that style of animation, you might also like the animated sequences in The Wall.

when that movie came out my friends were all seriously into it. As a non-metal head, it did not do much for me

Spinal Tab is the obvious rock/metal flick, if you've never seen it.

Also, while its(mostly) a documentary, check out The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years. The debachery in that film is certainly laughable.

The Wall is a great suggestion; not seen that. Reminds me of another music/concert film which kicks ass, though - 'Stop Making Sense'.

Will check out Sin City, too.

Will do, along with the first Decline of Western Civilization.

Interstellar 555

That was a pretty good one.

Heavy Metal was a unique movie in it's day. The American Anime style heavily influence Aeon Flux the cartoon.

I can't think of any other movie that went hard rock with adult anime.

Interstella 5555 you mean - electro rather than metal themed, but similar otherwise.

That reminded me of Wave Twisters which is more comedy oriented and has scratching/electro music.

Good one! Sounds interesting: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0291559/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

Also, reminded me of Roadside Prophets, which is completely unlike 'Heavy Metal', but does star Adam Horovitz of the Beastie Boys.

And Interstella 5555 sounds like it fits the theme, for sure.

the Chris Homes interview when he was floating in the pool as his mom watched was pretty intense, even if it was somewhat faked as has been claimed...

I haven't seen Heavy Metal in a million years but, yeah, it's a neat one. Did you know that Dan O'Bannon, the guy who wrote the B-17 segment, also wrote Alien?

For others to check out, Repo Man should be on any list. I just watched it (for the millionth time) the other night, in fact.

How about Tank Girl? It has some of that same sci-fi punk vibe. It also has Devo.

And some neat blue chip anime features that have a dark vibe: Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Vampire Hunter D.

Repo Man is one of my favourites, and Tank Girl sounds perfect http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114614/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

Loved Akira and Ghost in the Shell; will check out Vampire Hunter D also. Thanks.

Small note: Last time I saw Vampire Hunter D, it was on VHS--and I had to walk to the video rental place to get it. Still, I remember it being cool. I should check it out again.

True Tank Girl story: a friend from school was the music editor: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0277941/ (I knew he worked on it but didn't realize he was the music editor until just looking it up.)

If you like the rotoscope animation style, check out Ralph Bakshi's American Pop . It's basically the history of American music from the postwar era through the early '70s. It's a great but relatively unknown movie.

Tank Girl is great. Where else would you see Ice-T as a battle-kangaroo?

FWIW, I think Naomi Watts (Jet Girl) is really gorgeous in that movie

Check out the South Park episode with an homage to Heavy Metal-style animation called (appropriately) Major Boobage. It's hilarious, and legitimately awesome.

Hmmm. It seems like it is time to redo this movie as a live action flick with CGI...

That's actually a pretty good movie IIRC. It's been a long time since I've seen it.

Along side the Ghost in the Shell and Vampire Hunter D, The Cowboy Bebop Movie is really good. The show in general was awesome.
