So, in grand fashion, I've blown the speakers in the corolla. This is not surprising. However, I have a problem. The stuff I used to run (Boston pro series components) seem to have gone the way of the dodo. Normally this would mean I would take a trip down to my local ultimate... Wait they're out of business, but there's circuit.... Nope they're gone.... But there's best buy.... Sure I do want a keurig with my measly speaker collection. What I'm getting at is, there's no place to bench test speakers anymore. So, I turn to you.
Things I like- loud. I will punish these speakers. I've blown up jl audio subwoofers. Warm sound. Not too sharp. Infinity kappas tend to be a bit sharp for me. Best analog I can come up with is the late 90s jbl North ridge series home speaker. Those were the bomb. I didn't mind my Polks, but they definitely needed help down low. I listen to everything, so a wide range of capabilities is helpful. I plan on powering them with an amplifier, so stuff that requires a few more watts is OK.
What about the Kappas with an L pad to level off the treble? Most component sets already have the -3db setting, and you can always add more L pad.
It's time for components, my friend.
If you're willing to throw an amp at the rig, JBL P660C will get loud without shattering your eardrums with ice pick treble.
Or these old goats. http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-TS-D1720C-6-75-Inch-D-Series-280-Watt/dp/B0015NRQ5S
Actually, i had a thread recently on budget components. http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/off-topic-discussion/quick-quick-car-audio-v-components-need-to-order-today/88887/page1/
Any of those would do you well, or CDT 6.5" Classics.
I grabbed these for the Cherokee. Really surprised at the performance. Would suggest: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Sony-XS-GS1720S-6-5-350-Watt-2-Way-Car-Audio-Component-Speakers-XSGS1720S-/271649015641?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f3f8b0759
Not bad for $70. There's a seller on ebay that has them for $60 that is slightly on the sketch side, but worth a shot.

Yeah, components for sure. Probably should have said that.
I think the $60-$70 Sonys are going to be your huckleberry keeping in the spirit of that car.
You have any interest in a Rockford Punch 160x4 to drive your stuff? I have one in great shape, even with original box and birth sheet. Pulled it out of the Escort years ago thinking i'd use it in something else, and that day hasn't come.

You know, I might. I was going to use these crazy micro amps Rockford has now, but if you can best their price....
What do those guys cost? The only thing i might use this thing on is the Cherokee, but i really "need" a 5 channel amp for that.
There's a pretty decent car audio store in Golden Valley, you could go there and see what they have to offer. http://www.mach1-audio.com/
Did you know that you can still buy Jensen triaxials?
blowing up tends to more often be the fault of thermal clipping. The more important part of your equation is the amp, i think...
Just look for something in speakers over 89db sensitivity. that should get plenty loud with an external amp.

Marking my calendar, as this may be the first time you've ever posted anything I agree with!
But yes, as madmallard points out, speakers blow up when they are driven by an amp that is being pushed too hard. A good clean amp and efficient speakers are the ticket.
I've heard about components, but never really looked into it.
From what I'm reading, the appeal is cleaner sound? Is that pretty much right?
From what I could see on Crutchfield, the woofers and tweeters come with their own mini amps.

Not sure if joking...
Those are crossovers haha.
But yes... better separation/imaging and cleaner dedicated signal.

Unfortunately not joking. I've always installed 2 and 3-way speakers to replace the factory stuff.
I'm trying to learn more about car audio.
My bad then, i think i had you mixed up with someone else who had recommended comps in the past, and it sounded like a joke i would have made with Tom in the first place.
The other advantage of components is that they open up a whole new level of quality available to purchase. Coaxials kindof "top out" at the bottom end of components in terms of quality both in build and sound.
If it's your bag, you could spend thousands of dollars on components if you chose to do so. I don't, because it's a CAR and a pretty terrible acoustical landscape to begin with, but the option is there.
After seeing the prices, I would probably stick with Coaxial.
But it's good to know what's out there. A decent amp will make Coaxials sound good.
I did a lot with car audio back in college, but it's been so long now, I'm out of touch.
I used to love the old Radio shack speakers. They made a 5-1/4 speaker with a whizzer cone that made surprisingly good car audio. Sadly, RS is no longer in the business of selling anything remotely connected to my interests.
A good set of 6 x 9 two or three ways never seems to go badly. Mount them in the bottoms of the doors- its generally the best place in that horrid acoustic environment known as the automobile. Don't skimp on the wire (14 ga copper stranded is good enough, make sure it's pure copper) and sensitivity is important in the speaker. I've seen noticeable difference in speakers rated 88 dB/watt vs even 89 or 90. 92 or better is usually good enough.
You can get pretty decent components for $100 or less, and they'll be a HUGE improvement over ~$50 coaxials, for whatever that's worth.
So when you are talking components, are you talking about the tweeter/woofer setup right?
I'm just trying to plan my system in my Corvair and the tweeters will be a bitch to mount.

Yep, separate with an external crossover, usually.

Whatever it is, I want Tue ones with the mini amplifiers.
