I think that falls under "doing one's homework".
I agree with you, if the owners on whose property you'd be working are not supportive, you are dead in the water.
There are ways to know this now in the local market before starting. Homework, homework, homework.

Yup, that's kinda what I was trying to say. Homework to the third power. That's all in a PROPER business plan. If a proper business plan is done you'll know how much money there is to be made out there and how much of it you'll take home, and how much work it'll take to do that.
I didn't want to come out and say it, but since others have...at this point it appears you are quite in the dark. That's fine, so was Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. But after doing tons of homework they made a ton of money. A successful business almost never happens by accident.
As odd as this sounds...

If I wanted to hear what I wanted to hear, I would listen to myself talk. This is the real world, and things aren't all gum drops and lollipops. Tell me the truth, my future is at stake, and this is as serious as a heart attack. I need input from those with positive viewpoints, as well as those off you who think it won't work.

Please note, I didn't say it won't work. I think it can.
I said it was a bad idea as you are currently approaching it.

I don't think anyone here is saying or is capable of saying whether your idea will or won't work. We don't have enough information. But it sounds like you may not have all the information you need either.
It is safe to say that your idea won't work until you do your homework and put together a complete business plan.

I'm saying it could work. I'm saying that because I researched the same idea. I am saying though, that it won't work if you haven't done your homework. just like in school, not doing your homework, while not a guarantee of failure sure goes a long way to failing. A business plan is a LOT of work, but it tells you, and any investors, spouses, or possible large customers that you are serious and in it for the long haul.
First and foremost: This is a sales job. Not a working on cars job. I know, WTF????
A guy I worked for once said 'nothing happens until someone buys something'. It doesn't have to be cash, for instance in the case of the wife it's having her be supportive. So you need to sell it to the wife. You need to sell it to the business owners where you will be working. You need to sell it to the people who own the cars.
In any sales position, it pays to try to anticipate objections. That's what is so valuable about negative feedback: it might bite you the first time but the second time you are prepared.
That's where doing your homework and having a business plan come in. I can sit on the couch and say 'dang I wanna start building roll cages for a living' but until I can show that I have at least tried to see where my market will come from, what equipment etc I will need and so forth no one else is going to buy into my idea.
That's where you are right now, somewhere between the couch and the desk pounding out a real plan. As a start: there are people already doing this, let me suggest that maybe you try to contact a few (out of your area, of course!) and see if they can offer some hints and share some experiences.
