A friend of mine just picked up a P71 crown vic.  Still has the spotlight, and seat divider.  Rubber floors.  A solid unit.  Well the auction house also had a nice Impala 9c1.  I learned after that 2012-14 impala 9C1 cop cars had an LFX with a 6 speed installed.  Now, I hate fwd.  And the plan is to turn this car into a gambler car.  Something we can beat to death off roading.  Someone tell me I should just get a crown vic like the rwd gods intended.  But I can't help this unnatural desire for a fwd 300hp v6 LFX.

FWD can do a lot of good things. If you hate it, you hate it, and you will drive it like you hate it. In a Gambler, that might be a lot if fun.

The CORRECT answer is the Caprice PPV with the 6.0 LS. Or if you're feelin real extra, an AWD " its not a taurus" Police interceptor.

You might be surprised how much of an off-road beating a P71 will take. Barring filling the intake with mud or driving it flat out into a tree, it will most likely drive away.

I can't honestly believe that this matter is up for discussion.  The answer is obvious:  1974 Dodge Monaco.

Those are a bit out of budget.  This auction house has about 10 cars all for around $3000

From a theatrical perspective you are correct. But the 96 9C1 was above and beyond one of the best police cruisers ever built.

This is the answer... Except that they're nearly 30 years old. My personal ranking, taking age but not cost or Gambler chops into account, would be this:

  1. Caprice PPV
  2. 94-96 Caprice 9C1
  3. Dodge Charge Police Pursuit
  4. 2020+ Explorer PIU
  5. P7B/P71/P73 (newest possible - 2004+ is better than 2003 is better than 2001 is better than 99)
  6. 2011-2019 Explorer PIU
  7. FWD Offerings

This was really just a decision between the two I listed.  I understand there are other ones out there.

I owned a 95 9C1. Can confirm the LT1 B body was superb.

I will offer that while the 89-90 9C1 was not fast, it handled really well. Addition of about 100hp would make them really really good.

Between the 2, I'd go for the Crown Vic. The Impala may actually be the better car overall, and is probably faster with better MPG... But I loved my time in a '98 P71... Which was probably the "worst" of the P71s.

A couple years ago I was actively shopping a 9th gen 9C1 or 9C3 but couldn't find anything decent. Somebody at the LTC home drives a nice clean white one with the proper wheels and hubcaps and I still get excited when I see it. I think with a little work they're capable of being awfully darn quick for what they are.

I attended BSR's evasive driving school at taxpayer expense twice.  The first time we drove Crown Vics.  The second time we drove Caprices.  I was a dyed in the wool Ford guy at the time* so it really hurt to admit the Caprices were better.

* I got better.  I discovered Italian cars.
