As detailed in my build thread, I'm building a grassroots home theater. I'm going to building two subwoofer cabinets in the next week or so (the wood is cut, but not assembled. I used MDF to keep the costs down. Because of this, I will need to cover the outside of the cabinets to make them pretty.
Both cabinets are about 45" high, 23" deep, and 12" wide.
I could cover them in speaker carpet for about $50. Not too bad, but not the look I'm really going for I guess.
I could paint them with a textured paint known as Duratex for about $80 or so. I think that'll look better than carpet, but with boxes that large, it'll look like I raided a skating rink and stole speakers.
Veneer would be sweet, but holy cow is it expensive! I couldn't find a 4X8 sheet for less than $100, I'd need 3!! Then I'd need to finish them with something, stain, poly, etc.
A guy at work mentioned pallet wood, make them look like shipping crates. Hmmm...
I also thought about getting the same 5 mm underlayment I used on the ceiling (see my build thread) and staining them. That'd only be about $30 + stain.
So, what do you guys think? Any ideas?
