I posted this in my new minibike project thread, but I'll surely find a wider audience here.

I'm trying to ID the engine that came on the thing.

My Google-Fu is not turning up much. Here's the ID tag:

The tag reads as follows: SBH 253A 3291F

It looks like a Tecumseh, and my prior experience with them dictates that SBH means Small Block Horizontal Shaft. I am trying to figure out what size it is, and what HP it is supposed to output.

Anyone have a clue what it is, or what it's from?

It does look like a Tecumseh, what does the big tag on the shroud say? That's where the model number is, stamped near the bottom after the maintenance info.

That tag/sticker has been removed, so I have no clue.

I know that on my older Briggs, and maybe all Briggs, the relevant numbers are stamped right into the sheet metal shroud. Might be hard to see if it's dirty or rusty.

Its definitely a Tecumseh, but there were a few licensed copies made by other companies like Sears/Craftsman. Parts aren't obsolete yet, but quickly approaching it.

The SBH stands for short block horizontal. The 3291F is the serial number and the assembly line/shift that built it. For instance, assembly line 1 might be A, B, and C for the three shifts. The 253A is the model/part number and sometimes indicates the CC or CI displacement, but 253 doesn't make much sense there. That would either be 253cc (too big) or 25.3ci (way too big) or 2.53ci (too small)

Tecumseh used different ID tag formats over the years, but more than likely, its either the 2.5hp or 3.5hp model.

Good info. I'm thinking it's at least a 5hp model just based on it's size. I had a 3.5hp Briggs sitting next to it and the Tecumseh dwarfed it! I have a later "Craftsman" 5.5hp OHV engine I can use, as well as a Tecumseh 8hp snowblower engine I can acquire.

253cc could be about right if it's an 8-9hp engine.
