If you really want Telecaster twang then install a set of Seymour Duncan Broadcaster pickups. The single best sounding Telecaster I ever owned had a Broadcaster bridge pickup. I loved it.
I was in college at the time so I ended up selling to pay rent and tuition. I also sold a gold top Les Paul Deluxe. I really miss that one sometimes.

Then why not buy a bare body and all of the upgrades and just scratch-build it then? Or do they not sell bare bodies?

They do. But the Peavey is probably as good as anything he can buy, and arguably one of the most undervalued guitars out there. So cost wise he's better off doing this.
At least this was true a few years ago when I was looking into hotrodding guitars.
Yeah, it's a case of using what I've already got, as others have said. And this Peavey body is a nice one. In fact, one of the only reasons I've thought of buying something like a Squier to mod instead, is that I think my Peavey is a rather underappreciated guitar, and I don't want to screw it up too much. So what I'm planning isn't anything that can't be reversed fairly easily. Not that I see the value of US Peaveys shooting up any time soon...
In reply to ditchdigger: I'm certainly not going to nail a serious vintage Tele tone for the sake of the scale length, neck and board material, just looking for a Tele-ish approximation. I'm not opposed to finding that tone of my own anyway - I know nobody else sounds like me on my old Harmony.
In reply to Ian F: The Peavey is 25.5", and I have a Warmoth 'conversion' neck, which is specifically designed to intonate on a guitar with 25.5" scale originally. They think of everything these days.

Man, I hate selling guitars. I can only think of two I sold that I didn't eventually regret.
I've bought and sold so many guitars I've lost track. The two stand outs are a PRS that played nice, but didn't sound all that great, and an 80's Les Paul custom I wish I'd kept. Hell, I wish I'd kept all of the Les Pauls I've owned... Although I'd have a half dozen or so (have three now). At the same time, my Strat is the guitar I play most.
