Having just obtained the Ham radio I will be use at rallys, I need to mount it. I do not intend to leave it in the car unless I am at a race so it has to be a temporary mount. The top of the dash would be the most convienient but I can do anything that will damage or mark it up. i thought I would check with the hive to see if anybody had a recommendations. My only thought so far is to just duct tape it but I am afraid it will leave residue. My wife suggested the Command stuff weve seen on tv.

Command stuff is awesome. I have a tablet/GPS mount stuck to the top of the steering column and it's great.

If you are going to rally with it in the car, it better be a sturdy mount. I don't know if Command is up to that task.
What about an overhead mount like the MFP used in Mad Max?

I should clarify. Im working the rally, not driving. If I was driving I would bolt that sucker down with 1/2 inch grade 8.

What kind of antenna will you be using?

Mine sits on a piece of 1/2" plywood in the passenger footwell. It is mounted on a "ramp" so that I can see the display. It will tuck under the legs of a passenger.

Plop it in - connect the power wire (it stays in the car) and attach the mag mount antenna.

Yes, I know if I get in an accident it might fly around, but so will all the other E36 M3 I have in the car at rallies.

A Comet sbb5 with a magnet mount. Thats what the chief of communications recommended.

I bought the heaviest Command strips they sold at the store and mounted the radio on top of the dash. Seems to hold real nice and solid. I figured I would let it ride there for the next couple days and see how it does.

Thats a good idea. I might look into something like that before the next rally I'll be going to in April. Got a pic of it installed?

On offroad rallies I've used cheapo Chinese flexible shaft or splined hinge (not friction-hinged!) suction cup mounts to hold a PDA running a GPS app to my windscreen (if you look closely you can see it in the pic in my rides with the ocean in the background). Once stuck properly it holds on quite well, I think I've only had it come loose at the suction cup once, for serious offroading on stockish Samurai suspension that's damn good.

Edit: Wait is this a handheld unit or something meant for a DIN slot?

I think you meant to say you can not do any damage to the dash, right? Cuz, I could have damaged your dash without all the trouble of you getting a HAM license.

Youve been trying to lag screw a hula girl to my dash since we met!

The command tape held it very well on todays drive so I think that will be the ticket. I will know for sure on Sunday when I take it off

I will get one for you, but not tonight. It is heading for -30 degrees C tonight and I am not going outside!

You'll need to log in to post.
