This is my Brother in Laws car and it lives at my house right now. It needs to go. It has extreme sentimental value but he has a new GTI that he is driving and well if I can show him its worth more then scrap I can sell it and we can do some mods to the GTI.

2001 Forester 130K, all new suspension, new brakes newer tires. Clutch replaced at 100K miles. Salvage title due to theft. It is a manual which is what everybody asks when I drive it to change the battery. Very clean inside but has the usual Subaru peeling clear coat on the hood and the front bonnet. Drives relly nice. Interior is really good for the age.

Any idea what this thing is worth. I see STI swapped ones for sale, and I see stance'd ones here and there for huge money but like If I put this on craigslist or facebook marketplace what could I get it I wanted it gone in a week or two.

I think you need California market specific information to value that.   I can tell you here in New England something as clean as that would easily get $5,000.00.

In CA, everythign is clean (ex Boston resident here). That said, I would take a check over to wearymicrobe house now, then I saw salvage title. That kills it for me, and most other people.

As mentioned, people have fears over salvage title.  What more can you say or prove about the theft that caused the salvage.  In general, a salvage title needs "the rest of the story" to put potential buyers at ease .  I have bought a rebuilt car from a body shop that specialized in rebuilding Prius.  The car came with before and after pictures and an understanding of what had been replaced.

Here in Ohio, a salvage title can not be driven until it goes through the state inspection process making then a rebuilt salvage title which can be driven on the roads.  I mention this because you might want to be clear if this is similar in your state.

You have called this a salvage title and mentioned theft.  This makes me think (per Ohio laws) that this car was just recently recovered from theft and is not yet legal to drive on the road.  Is that the case?

If that is not the case and there is good enough reason to the rebuilding then I would come out with $4,800 on this car and be quick to drop to $4,500 with $4k being my bottom.

I predict your buyer will come from far, like where there are hills/Mt or maybe harsh desert. The cars are popular but finding one not molested is hard.

Totally legal to drive. Salvage title is almost 10 years old at this point. What we were told was the car was stolen, they were paid out by the insurnace and bought it back when it was recovered a month or two later.

In reply to wearymicrobe :

Great story and great reason for the total. Also, the car was so nice to the rightful owner that they wanted to keep it.

Clean and take nice pictures and it will sell quickly.

Totally unrelated, but since it was mentioned above ... The Ohio salvage vehicle inspection is apparently only to verify that stolen parts were not used in the rebuild process, from the hours of time I spent at the state patrol inspection station while getting the Exocet blessed by the same folks.  In no way did I see any activities by the state patrol inspectors that even appeared to assess road-worthiness.
