hey guys. I'm trying to tune up my sisters 1997 318i (BMW) and this thing is whistling and sucking in air. I want to replace it but I don't know what it is. Is it a weird pcv valve?
It's a disk on the back of the engine and it's attached via a hose to the valve cover
Edit: I should have mentioned this: I already ran a full check on the Flux Capacitor. It is functioning.
I think that's the flux capacitor
Sorry, I had to get back to the office to add pictures. It's too difficult from the phone.
In the second image, it's the round disk with the BMW logo stamped right on the top of it.

Throw THAT away,
It's nothing but trouble!
Whoa WTF is that...can you draw a diagram of how it's hooked up?
EDIT: Oh you know what, that could be your Brake Fluid Circulator (see my new topic )
I'm going to go with fuel pressure regulator. Nah, it probably is a PCV valve
The big hose coming off of it goes to the valve cover. Otherwise, I don't know. I didn't have much time to look at it and take pics.
Just in case you're wondering, a PCV valve from the dealer is about $100.00. This might be it.
If it's hooked up to the valve cover it MUST be either a PCV, a catch can or crankcase breather filter of some sort. (Looks like a PCV)
REALOEM is your friend.
This may or may not be it, but poke around and you will find the right diagram....

Ooooohhh! I like that, bludroptop! I found a different diagram with the part on it. It looks like Gameboy might be right (Crank Case Breather Valve).

Part number 16 looks to be right.
well, that was the part. I got the old one off and then realized why it failed. The hose that connected to it disintegrated and turned into gummy dust. Now I need the damned hose. $$$
Oh well. Thanks for your help everyone!!
