I went out last night and sampled every rum recommended in this thread.

I now have the definitive answer.

+3 on the Sailor, but I don't think that's an appropriate rum for the task at hand.

It's interesting... as I've gotten older, I've gone from thinking that the three wise men (Captain Morgan, Jack Daniels, and Jose Cuervo) were quality drinks to thinking that the only people that drink them are ignorant of what decent booze actually is.

Bacardi 8 is some really good stuff. One of the best rums I've had.

When I spent my first honeymoon in St. Croix (1994) we drank Cruzan Rum because it was local and cheap and decent. I brought home bottles of the stuff for like $2 a bottle! Sure has come a long way in the past few years.

For really mainstream Rum, Captain Morgan Private Stock is pretty decent. If the recipient isn't a big Rum expert, its a good way of saying "I got you something better than the regular Captain because your better than just a regular friend". The review is here:

Not that it matters much, but Captain Morgan recently (in the last few months) moved their production away from Ponce PR to the USVI. It used to be done at Serralles (where Don Q is produced).

I'd like to visit Cruzan Rum someday.

But based on current visits and festivals:

1) Don Q 2) Bacardi family 3) Barrilito.

I'm kind of biased toward Puerto Rico....

I used to stock up on Lt. Dan spiced rum for my charter airplane. My customers liked it.

Back in '87 I spent a few months in Burmuda and on my return I brought my boss a few bottles of rum. I don't remember the brand, but after that, my boss treated me like I could walk on water. What some guys will do for free booze.

I went with the early recommendation of Cruzan Single Barrel. Coincidentally, I stopped his shop today and I guess the thank you gift worked, as now we're kicking around some car related business ideas!

Glad that worked out for you!

It still is local and that cheap there. But around here, once exported, it's about the same price as Bacardi, for a much better product. I brought back a bunch of bottles last trip I went out there. That bottle of "Single Barrel Estate" is $10-$15 in the USVI.

I will maintain that Cruzan makes the best flavored rums.
