And possibly an El Camino? And possibly a nice rear-drive wagon? Be still my heart.

Meh, i'll wait and buy them used in 2 years anyway! Thank you GM.... now was that so hard?
I think that if this is true, GM needs to be smart about this. Make the sedan to their hearts content, but make the Wagons and Utes in very limited numbers and as the dealers order them, make a little more.
The naming needs to be like this:
Base Model: Caprice Wagon: Caprice Estate SS: Impala SS Ute: El Camino
I like the idea of an Impala SS wagon.

No way. If I had to do that, I would be stuck with a slutomatic V6 model with all the interior panels falling off the body.

I'm with you, except that I don't think there is much cachet in the "Caprice" name (well, outside of the Donk community...), maybe call'em all Impala? Better yet, pretend it's not massive and call is "Chevelle."
As a 30 y.o. I can tell you that most people my age associate the name "Caprice" with Grandparents, maybe older folks have a different association and younger people don't remember the last Caprices.
Where's the equivalent speculation from the Ford camp? I need some 'domestic' turbo inline 6 in my life.
Hmmm, problems I see with this happening:
Mercedes and BMW are already shifting to smaller engines with fewer cylinders, can GM really continue to build more and more powerful V8 engined cars and trucks with tightening CAFE standards a year or two away?
Article says that Chevy/GMC need a replacement for the Colorado/Canyon and that a "ute" spun off these cars could fill that niche...I thought the replacements for the Colorado/Canyon had already been designed, the designs had already been shown in truck mags, and were going to be in showrooms within 6-12 months?
If there's really a market for a "medium priced" rear wheel drive "large" sedan, why did GM and Ford let the previous cars die?
My $0.02, and I have to admit I'm usually wrong about nearly everything.
Autoblog just go the update that it's true from GM.
Autoblog said: *UPDATE: Well that didn't take long. General Motors has officially confirmed that the new Holden-derived sedan sold in the U.S. will be called simply Chevrolet SS. The "limited production" SS will race in NASCAR beginning with the 2013 Daytona 500 and will appear in showrooms in 2014. GM isn't getting into specifics, but says "The much anticipated Australian-built car will benefit from significant technology advances which enhance overall performance." As to additional bodystyles like a wagon or pickup, well, GM isn't saying. See more in the official press release added below, and click on the image above to get a look at GM's newest racer all camo'd up.

Seriously? They are just going to call it the Chevrolet SS?
I wonder what braintrust thought that one up?
Way to screw up a nameplate.

I don't care what they call it.... just bring it. Daddy needs a new car!

That article is horrible. The car pictured is the current Aussie built and North American sold Chevy Caprice PPV which is based on the Holden Statesman. The proposed SS is based on the Commodore (and G8) which is the short wheelbase version of the Zeta platform shared by the Statesman and Commodore (and in highly modified form as the Camaro).
Fun fact. The Commodore is already availble in the middle east as a Chevy. Over there it's called the Lumina.
Here's a link to an Autoblog article with a Lumina picture gallery from 2009.

It's happening all over the place. At Harrah's Casinos everything is a "The"
"The shops"
"The Pool"
"The Pool after Dark"
"The Loft"
"The Pier"
Marketing is dead and they just give it a descriptive name and add a "the" in front of it.
I also feel the same about BMW's recent chassis codes.. but that is a different rant
I found a non-US Chevy Lumina all but abandoned in the Kuwaiti desert in 2006. It looked new, but it was just sitting alone in the middle of the berkeleying desert with nothing around for miles and miles. Very weird, I think we called it in to the Kuwaiti Army.
Well. It's about time someone in NA$CAR is basing their tube frame V8 RWD race car on a V8 RWD street car.
EDIT: From the Comments: Thank you Labor for tossing away $275m of our money on these dinosaur manufacturers. And to the unions "protecting Australian jobs" - stand back and admire your handiwork!
I suppose things are the same everywhere.
I'll be mildy excited when it makes it to the showroom. I'll be really excited if there is a wagon version. I'll get all quivery and start seeing how much I can sell my kids for if the announce an El Camino.
OK, now who wants to help me come up with a story as to why I just HAVE to have a new ute
LSx and 6 speed......droool
There's probably something you need to carry that you can't carry in your present car. If they announce the ute it would probably be an excellent time to get that pet alligator you've been wanting to take long walks with.
You'll need to log in to post.
