Tropical Storm Irene is projected to become a hurricane soon. She is on a projected path for my back yard, and then to Margie's patio. Local Fox station is full of doom and gloom. Too soon for "Were all going to DIE!!", but that will come by Wed. Already, tension in the air. What was that about Tulsa being nice this time of year?

I R glad I moved 100 miles inland. I miss Chucktown in a lot of ways, but hurricane season ain't one of them.

I have a brother in St Augustine, a very good friend in Orlando and of course the GRM crew down there, y'all be safe OK?

I've about had it with SoFla. My business is quite portable, so we will just see what happens. I like the ocean, but hurricanes will touch just about any coastal area. Maybe Oregon?

These aren't the ones that scare me. It's got a lot of land between it and us that'll keep it from getting too out of hand. It's the ones that are full strength by the time they reach the Caribbean, and stay just a little north of Hispanola. Those I do not like.

Actually, we could use a nice tropical storm or category 1 to knock all the dead stuff out of the pine trees. That makes forest fire season far more bearable once that rolls around again.

In the meantime, we're all ready for whatever. My generator is freshened for the season, and I keep various backups of several years of magazine files in a few redundant locations. And some Spam. But that's more because Spam is awesome and not because of hurricanes.

I'll take hurricanes over hipsters.

JG, you are right. Down there if there's not a hurricane half the state's on fire, if it's not that there's exotic snakes swallowing alligators, if that's not happening there's some sort of weird white trash thing going on that makes worldwide news. Think I'll stay right here.

We got it all man. Even a town full of retired sideshow freaks

Also, no state income tax, and a governor who looks like the melting Nazi from Raiders of the Lost Ark.

What's not to love?

And, Sweetwater was founded by Russian Circus dwarfs. That's just west of Miami.

Why is it the Fox stations are always the one waving the doom, gloom, and death flag when it comes to weather? Does not matter if it is snow, sun, hurricanes, or even a thunderstorm..

In reply to mad_machine:

Maybe one should look at the broadcasts from the Weather Channel and other outlets.

Do that and then ask "Why?".

Hint: it's all about ratings and viewer numbers.

Tulsa is nice Late-Sept-May. June/July/August are pretty hot.

You would definitely have a substantially lower cost of living. I know you're a business owner, but OK also boasts an Unemployment rate that is nearly 1/2 the rest of the country.

EDIT: Approx 25% lower according to what I just looked up.

Housing here is CHEAP compared to most parts of the country.

If go to the suburbs outside Tulsa proper, it's no problem to find a 2200-2400 sq ft house, 4 beds, 2 or 2.5 baths, 3 car garage on 1-1.5 acres for $250k.

We're rapidly closing in on 13" of rain for the month of August here in NJ/SE PA... which is supposed to be drought season... most of it in the past week.

We blame this on the fact my g/f is in the middle of a home remodel and right now most of the house has no gutters, resulting in much of rain going into her basement.

You should come to Minnesota. If there's a dark cloud 200 miles away, every single channel is running a warning crawl on the bottom of the TV screen.

That's approximately a $600k to $700k house here. I guess we have basements, but I don't think that quite makes up for it

Hehe, yep, OK isn't exactly the most cultured place you've ever been. However, we do finally seem to be developing a decent food/beer scene.

But our cost of super low cost of living allows you to go visit all the "cool" places.

Soon, we're going to the Carribean for the second time in a year. And when you're home in OK, the people are great..........super friendly.

On second thought, why don't you guys forget about here.

If you don't mind winter, much of the Great Lakes area is quite coastal-ish.

aside from the price of living (one of the highest in the country) and the amount of people (highest in the country per sqm) the mid-atlantic region rarely sees radical weather. We get close to 100 in summer.. get down around freezing in winter, tornados, fires, earthquakes, and hurricanes are rather rare from the eastern shore of MD to the northern tip of NJ

This is the garden spot of the east coast, wetherwise... it's a shame so many people know it and live here

Born and raised in NE Ohio. No way I would move back. Yes, there are some charming cities, like Vermillion, but Lake Effect Snow is something to behold. The day I pulled out for Florida it was-10, with 4 feet of snow on the ground.

Looks like Irene turned from a TS to a category 1 hurricane while going over Puerto Rico. Haven't heard from relatives (In-Laws), but looking at the satillite views, they will probably be ok on the south end of the island.

But, from what I see on the news, unless it hits Hispanola directly, it will grow more in strenght. The mountains in PR didn't exactly hold things back, but the mountains on Hispanola are quite a bit larger. Alas, Puerto Rico seems to have shifted the eye direction north, missing the DR and Haiti.... Well, directly.

So you in Florida may be in for some fun.

We are going on a cruise in a month. Assuming there is still something around.

And I'm the one standing outside DARING the weather to actually do something for once. That storm over north is probably the worst I can remember. Or the one that levelled Blue Earth... but generally the metro gets squat. Except for snow. Frickin HATE snow.
